Mot failure

Hi, my 6b failed it's mot last week on the inner tie rod, I can find track rod ends but I have not been able to find the inner tie rod. Could anybody point me in the right direction. Thanks.

If its failed due to play do you know you can tighten up the ball joint by adjusting the shims

Peter the ball joint is spring loaded, no shims present, its the pinion and shaft that use shims for pre load. :wink:

There were shims at the end of the spring in my 6A - I assume to make up for the loss of spring strength over the years

Might have been Peter.
But if done correctly the pre load is achievable without the need to extend the spring.
The factory figures are very broad at 20 to 40 Lb f in to move the arm in the socket.

There are shims to adjust the clearance at the inner ball joint:- part nos. 211352 [.010"], 211353 [.002"] and 211353 [.004"]. Adjustment of clearance will not materially affect the preload, which is dependent on the spring load.

211352/3/4 etc are only fitted to MANUAL racks.
As this is an SE6B I`m 99.9% certain it has a PAS rack. :wink:

My 6A had a manual rack - I assumed a PAS would be the same re track rods end connections and the bits leading up to them

Yes, the power rack has lock nuts by which the clearance can be adjusted.

TWO entirely different manufacturers Peter.
Burman did the PAS racks.
British Leyland got the Manual Racks made, either in house, or to their spec.
PAS rack was made for Reliant exclusively.
Manual racks are Left Hand Drive Austin Princess, mounted upside down in the Scimitars.

Is there *any* bodge that Reliant didn't get up to in their long history? Surely they must have been the most 'creative' car builder this country has ever produced. I shouldn't wonder if of the famous "over 450 changes" made in producing the MB a good proportion were along the lines of "what about if we fitted these bits upside down and back to front, but put them on the other side of the car, so they do the same job but look like an upgrade...?" to which the co-designer replied "Good idea - but let's use the bits off the Riley Elf instead, that's sure to fool them ..."

Truly parts procurement in these cars never ceases to amaze me... :hand:

TVR were equally inventive I seem to recall.

I think half the 450-odd MB changes were necessity as much anything else. Only time I’ve ever been in one, it had dancing VDO gauges and the paint was falling off, so that’s two “improvements” I didn’t think much of..
