Autobox stalling in reverse

Post by thesmithsUK » Sun Nov 03, 2019 6:09 pm

Hi all,

I'm the new custodian of the green GTE well known to this forum - viewtopic.php?t=3820.

But there's a problem with the automatic transmission.

After a faultless 1 hour drive, I engaged Reverse and the car stalled! (I'd selected reverse a couple of times much earlier in the journey with no problem.)

It kept happening, and then even happening when selecting Drive!

I called my breakdown service and, 90 minutes later, the guy increased the idea speed to about 1000rpm.

Seemed fine when I set off (though the car had cooled down by this point).

15 mins later and it was stalling again on engaging Drive at traffic lights, junctions, etc. All a bit hair-raising because the drive was through Central London!

Called a second recovery service, who just trailored me back to a convenient London address.

So, if it's not the idle speed, what could it be? Transmission oil, torque converter, sensors...?

Advice appreciated.

Any advice on where to take it? Any respected specialists in London & South East, or is QRG in Kettering my best bet?

And sorry my first post isn't more positive!

Low oil level or contaminated oil .

Oil level would be my best guess as well - remember there is a sequence to go through to check the level.

That fault is usually down to the engine. Idle speed should be around 900 RPM because in drive or reverse you will drop 200 RPM approximately. If the engine is not in the fullness of health, there is insufficient torque to sustain it. Give the engine a service and take a detailed look for air leaks. I think you will find that to be the remedy. Also check the transmission fluid level, but that being low would cause a loss of drive, not stalling.

It is possible to have a faulty torque converter that will cause it to stall in drive but I have only ever known one case of that.

low oil gives a slow (or no) engagement in my experience. I had a 6a that stalled when you engaged drive - ended up at over 1500 rpm before it would pull away (spinning the wheels!) and I think that was a TC fault (although never proved).

whilst I agree that low oil should make it a slow engagement it also makes it very snatchy and this used to make my car stall in reverse,

Many thanks, all.

It's being trailered up to QRG tomorrow for diagnosis later this week. Will let you know how I get on.

Plan is also to get it serviced and MOT'd whilst there.

Possibly an air leak on the induction side, which causes the idle to increase, but with no power or torque, thus it stalls when loaded up in gear.

Sounds odd that the stall just appeared out of the blue though.

Well, picking the car up tomorrow from QRG.

Had an MOT test whilst there - passed with no advisories (continuing the impressive record of eight consecutive tests without a single advisory!).

Timing and mixtures adjusted, new vacuum pipes from the gearbox and to the manifold fitted (old ones were perished and detached), cleaned out dirt from float chamber and carb filter, blew out jets (55’s), recharged K&N filter, reattached kick-down cable, replaced gearbox valve, compression test (all at 145psi), replaced spark plugs, topped up auto box fluid, etc. Apparently now driving very well!

No smoking gun, just a few little things all adding up (the vacuum hoses being the main issue at a guess)?

Hi Phil,
Yes - I think that's right. Did 120 miles this morning of mixed roads - A14, M11, M25, A2, etc. Plenty of stop-start mixed with 70+ cruising. Didn't miss a beat. Now I can enjoy it!
