SE 6a Chassis Problems

Post by Peter Armitage » Mon Apr 08, 2019 6:29 am

My 6a, which seems to be the second 6a according to Don Pithers numbers listing, needs extensive chassis repairs. I have seen a GTC body and chassis advertised and the chassis appears to be good. Are there any differences between the GTC chassis and that of my 6a that I should know about. Any information would be appreciated.

Yes, the differences are many. A 6a chassis should be easier to find though.

GW used to have a stock of galvanised chassis.

Where are you? If the body is coming off, I could perhaps sort the repair for you.

Welcome to the forum Peter :D

As said, there are differences, but the engine mounts are probably the only one that you need to worry about.

Pretty sure the galv chassis that GW had were old Middlebridge units - the 2.9i are probably the same mounts as the 2.8?

Yes 2.9i and 2.8 are identical blocks in the mount area.

SE 6a Chassis Problems

Post by Peter Armitage » Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:22 pm

Thanks for replies. I've given up idea of buying GTC project and breaking it as seems a shame to reduce the remaining number of convertibles and complicate things for myself. Project back to back burner for now until a chassis crops up or a cheap car roller on evilbay.
Thanks again for help .

the new galvanised chassis's graham walker had were from the middle bridge auction, but I was told they originated from reliant's 2.8"s stores, I bought the last bare one they had some years ago now, for a GTC with a 2.9.

I know this has been done to death but remember that the vehicles id should stay with a chassis, many scimitars over the years have had their chassis changed for better ones and in the main these have gone unchallenged but times are changing especially in my opinion as prices climb, buyers become a little more discerning and have the vehicles checked before exchanging their folding stuff.... I know of a couple of owners with very nice classics that have these issues when numbers don't match paperwork and buyers have walked away. Doesn't just happen with scimitars. I have just walked away from an expensive restored defender, the engine number and chassis number did not match the paperwork and the dealer just shrugged his shoulders and said it was built out of two.
Just food for thought if an insurance company has to pay out on a write off the assessor should check the stamped numbers to confirm id and if it is a burn out and recovered to a duty garage, Police examiners get involved and provide the details found directly to DVLA to have destroyed markers placed against the correct id.
I would not like to guarantee a pay out if the numbers don't match, not to mention it is an offence for DVLA not to notified about changes, such as engine number changes .... Anyway there is plenty of current information out there, and on the DVLA website. This isn't meant to be scare mongering just pointing out some pitfalls that you may encounter.

The GTE chassis is a relatively simple design and once removed from the body is fairly straight forward to repair. Good luck with what ever you decide to do :D

If needed I do have a chassis in decent condition for a fair price. From a car broken for spares after light accident damage.
Downside is: I am located in the Netherlands.

Many thanks to Erik but whilst a trip to the Netherlands would be great I fear it would bust the restoration budget.
I am going to put things on hold for a while now unless a chassis turns up. It was only the possibility of the GTC that prompted me

I am in North Shropshire between Shrewsbury and Stoke. An e mail when you decide would be good in case I don't look on the forum!
