That's a strange one, Roy. I looked at a spare (mucky!) later front cover I have and it has exactly the same rib. Oil deflector for the fuel pump orifice, perhaps? If so, if you're not using the mechanical fuel pump I can't see the need for it.

If the new gear is seated properly on the cam, it can only be that it is a smidgeon thicker than the original.

Hopefully grindng it down will fix it and you can get on to the next job on your list. :wink:
