Hear, hear! And as someone who appreciates number plates, that one is an absolute cracker! OSM 205M; so in other words it looks like 'Osm 2 Osm' or 'Awesome to Awesome', almost like 'going from strength to strength'. Best of luck with the engine fitting, and enjoy that stunning car! 8)

Tom

PS - Or, it could be someone's comment on your car... It's 'awesome... TOO awesome'! :)

Thanks for that diy, it looks like a good one, i bought it as a stalled project. Hopefully after I've got the engine sorted it won't need too much more to get it up and running. Time will tell!

Diy, Tom, thanks for your kind comments , coincidentally my wife spotted the osm 2 osm possibility. I only saw the familiar SM being from my, or should i say our part of the world.

Engine Rebuild Novice

I'm just plucking up the courage to start putting things together, and I've run into a bit of a mystery. In both the workshop manual and GWs parts catalogue the front crank oil seal (part 39 in the picture) is shown behind the crank gear. However the only place I can see that a front oil seal would fit is in the front cover i.e. in front of the gear. Are the pictures misleading or am I getting in a muddle?

I think it's illustrators licence....look at the page in the parts list where the front cover is shown and the front cover oil seal is positioned as you suggest

Well, made some progress, crank and pistons in, very satisfying. Here's hoping I've put things together properly. Oil pump next, the 'kit' came with a shiny new one, but not a drive shaft which I'll need to source. However I don't have the clip that retains the shaft in the pump, and it doesn't appear in the Burtons catalogue. I haven't yet tried the usual traders, but before I do, does anyone know if the clip is an obscure or hard to locate part?

Yet more questions. I see from this site the importance of ensuring a good seal between oil pump and pick up pipe, and i have a gasket for this. However i don't have one in my 'kit' to go between pump and block. Also I can't see one in various manuals or even my 1990's GW CD Rom (yes I am that old). While I can easily make one, is it advisable to have one fitted , or will a smear of Wellseal be enough (or metal to metal) ?
TIA, Ian

I have never seen one or fitted one but ensure but surfaces are very flat
Any sealant that get dislodged could block an oil way

Ian very sorry but can only find the spring clip.
And there is no gasket between the pump and block, I just put a smear of Blue Hermetite round the pump before fitting.

Today's niggle. The attached photo is of a part from my (previously sealed) gasket kit labelled 'Ford conversion kit Essex'. I think I can see where all the other gaskets/seals go, but not the one in the photo. I've checked various manuals and diagrams and can't see anything like it - but if I was a conspiracy theorist I'd say a prankster has put a Cologne bit in the packet as it looks like a rear bearing cap gasket from a 2.8 engine. I am a bit concerned though as the diameter is similar to the Essex rear crankshaft oil seal - any thoughts?

It looks remarkably like the crankshaft nose seal for the Mini I have just rebuilt!
