yes 185x14 and at least 20 yrs old but stored in the loft in the dark
...Thanks ever so much but have 'bit the bullet' & gone with some vintage-looking 175 full profile jobbies through my local firm 'All Car Exhausts & Tyres' in Leek - Pete put one on one of the Sierra rims & jacked up the car & put it on both the back & front to check that clearance would be okay & that there would be no fouling on full-lock. We even tried it on the boot mounting & discovered the bolt will need extending for the special 'Spartan' knurled retaining 'nut' to fit........but one of the guys there is a dab hand with a welder & they have that thread there. They'll be £40 each fitted which is a bit cheaper than your man in Werrington, Phil - a lovely guy, though & very helpful. He came back to me on Sat. afternoon (can't find my note but think his was £48....but can't remember the exact size of tyre! (Gone over budget with it but it will be a lovely summer car for someone!)

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.

...No I wouldn't go less than the original spec. size on the SE5, Roy - I have 185.80 x 14's on original steels....as Phil intimated these will be on a Spartan kitcar - interestingly when I took the remaining 4 wheels in to have the tyres put on, Pete said that they were specified for the base version of the Mk,4 Golf of '98 when it was already an obsolete tyre size but is one of the reasons why there are some to be had...Talking of narrow I've been running 135 profile tyres on the Herald!!(I read somewhere that that size is the nearest to the old 5.20 x 13 crossply...)
