How does the overdrive inhibitor switch work?

Post by Jpwill7675 » Thu Feb 21, 2019 10:18 pm

I am rebuilding my SE5a. It’s a manual with overdrive and the later 3 rod box.

Whilst the engine and gearbox are out, I wanted to check the inhibitor switch is operating properly. The switch has no continuity in its “relaxed” state and does have continuity as the lever is extended.

However, I can’t see how the mechanism works. It seems that the switch is just resting on the gear selection shaft. It does not appear to do anything different if 3/4 gears are selected.

I have attached a couple of photos. Could anyone confirm if the mechanism is correctly orientated?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards, Jim

How does the overdrive inhibitor switch work?

It should switch on as the gear lever is moved across to the right (ie third/fourth) but no continuity when the stick is far left (reverse, first, second).

It sits against the end of the lateral shaft at the base of the gearstick, not on top of it as per your pics.
