Crankshaft timing gear removal

Thanks Jim. I saw that picture in a search earlier. I'm a numpty! I've stripped it further than I needed to. Oh well, at least I'm learning about the engine and I know what's been done.

Thanks again.

Crankshaft timing gear removal

Heat didn't work but bought a puller and it worked a treat. Lower gear removed I expected to see a core plug but nothing. I read, or thought I had read there were core plugs behind the cover plate but the three I can see on the front of the engine are all higher up and accessible with only removing ...

Crankshaft timing gear removal

Hi I'm replacing both timing gears. The big nylon wheel came off quite easily with two long screw driver one on each side. However the smaller wheel has a longer way to come of the shaft and keyway and isn't for budging. Is a puller required to remove this gear?

Thanks

What engine do I have?

That ties in Jim. The car was registered 1st of September 1972 however the vin plate and registration document quote and engine number SC4454. That's why I assumed SC5977 is a later engine.

What engine do I have?

After a successful evening where I made some progress with my timing gear change I decided to have a closer look at the engine number with better light. Sure enough there's a tiny s infront of the C, so my number is SC5977, so a Scimitar engine but out of a later car. There's also the numbers 3C1 st...

What engine do I have?

I was speaking to the chap from Essex engines while ordering a new timing gears and gaskets. He advise that the ford engines had 5 digit engine numbers . The number on my engine definitely starts with the letter C. Thanks for changing the heading!

Thanks Alan

What engine do I have?

I've recently purchased a 72 5a. The engine number is different from that show on the vin plate. The number is C5977. Any ideas what this has come out of and what year it might be?

Thanks Alan

V6 essex timing gear

Thanks for your advice. I have history for the car back to 2004 and can't see anything suggesting it's been replaced since then so I'll get a steel set ordered. Is there anything else I should look to replace at the same time while the front of the motor is apart?

V6 essex timing gear

Thanks for your advice. I'm even slower at getting back! I took the pump off this evening and what I'm seeing through the hole is a steel gear with gold coloured teeth. Do I take it from what I've seen that I have fibre timing gear? I'll check the receipts I got with the car to see if the hoses are ...

V6 essex timing gear

Thanks had a better look this evening. My car has braided hoses fitted and it doesn't look like they will allow much movement so I think I will disconnect so I can remove the pump straight from its mount.

Thanks for your help.

V6 essex timing gear

Having finally got myself a GTE after a long winter search I'm wanting to check the timing gear on my new purchase. Is it necessary to remove the fuel lines to the fuel pump before removing it or is it simply undo the bolts and move it to one side to inspect?

Thanks

Go for it. I did it last year with friends in the SS1 I had over 3 days and I would do it again in a heart beat. It was magic. We did it at the end of April and the weather was mixed (We got heavy hail one day!) Couple of thoughts for you to consider. If I had a passenger I would take an extra day o...
