Yes; I thought all metallic elements were electrically conductive (with perhaps slight variations in conductivity/resistance). Have I been labouring under a misapprehension all these years? :shock:

No idea how auto boxes work, but the only thing that occurs is that it's a bit which is associated with the gear lever in Park position. I presume you can't start the engine with it in any other position?

It's a few years since I had a 5a, but from memory: If the starter's spinning, but not engaging, I would assume that the little cog which should be meshing with the ring gear is stuck on its spiral, so you'll have to get the thing off to see, and if necessary clean that up (no oil!). Again from memo...
