Rat Rod (running)

The good news continues. I took it for a test drive to the petrol station and if you ignore running out of petrol halfway (I knew it didn't have much in but misjudged how little) all is good. The clutch is massively improved, it stops when I push the brake pedal (locks up if I push to hard). Most im...

Rat Rod (fingers crossed)

Giddy from the ignition success and Richie on a streak of car related good luck, we decided to sort the brakes and clutch. The suspect brake pipe was replaced with a new one and the brakes bled no problem at all. Win one  Took off the clutch master cylinder and it looked like a refurb was n...

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

Thank you all for your patience with me, I think it's sorted. Dizzy cleaned within an inch of it life and weights lightly oiled, new points and condenser fitted. Dizzy in and static timed, started and set to 600 rpm. Timing set, revs ajusted, timing set again. Steady 600 rpm timing doubled checked a...

Wanted Clutch return spring.

Ladies and Gents

I noticed when fiddling with the clutch on Rat Rod that the clutch return spring has snapped, does anyone have spare one?

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

I thought you'd tried a standard dizzy in it already? Maybe not then :? I did try but I couldn't get it to fire. It turned out that it was my fault I misread the wiring diagram and fried the points. I've ordered points and condenser and I'l fit them (correctly wired) and report back. In the ...

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

Adam

Can't hurt to check, although I'm leaning towards the electronic ignition. I've had it a couple of times where the engine seems to be funning/revving fine then it develops a pop. It's also about the only part of the ignition system I haven't changed

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

Jim Video looks bad but it's just the video, in reality it's firing fine. Adam I have but I've never used it for RPM, wonder if I still have the instructions...... I've had the same fault with 2 dizzy's his, the only common part is the electronic ignition. Having fried the points I had (my miss read...

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

Ok I'm mostly doing that. Differences are with the idke screw all the way in I get about 650/670 hard to tell because he needle is bouncing about. I've got electronic ignition so not points and I'm setting to 14 btdc. So here is a mark a made on the dizzy and coolant hose after I'd set the timing. 2...

Just had a Facebook comment saying the timing needs to be set at 600 rpm and vac advance disconnected.

Just in case I've been a biff (again) what is the procedure ?

Rat Rod (mobile timing)

I've fitted the new plugs and vac advance pipe. The timing is moving. I've set it several times now and after a rev/run the timing has moved. I took the dizzy out and tried the old dizzy(points) I could get it to fire, I turned it over with the cap off to try and watch the points working. I melted t...

Rat Rod (might be fixed?)

following some advice of Facebook I've checked the shear pin, Which "Shear pin" is this Steve??. After working on Essex engines for over 35 years I have never come across such a part  I think it was the roll pin that was being referred to. That's what I took it to be. If your timing is moving then check the length of the securing bolt as it could be bottoming out in the block
I'm reasonable confident that the dizzy isn't moving, but I will double check it. Thank you
