SE5a rebuild/rolling restoration - no brakes today

Managed to get at the rear cylinders today. The brake pads were pretty ropey and it looks like the wheel cylinder was the culprit. IMG_4065.JPG I struggled to remove one of the solid brake pipes from the cylinder and will make up a new length from scratch. I am correct in thinking it should be 3/16 ...

SE5a rebuild/rolling restoration - no brakes today

Thanks Jim & Phil for the suggestions. The fluid level is still on max in the reservoir and the master cylinder is quite new. I will check the rear cylinders today and also the clevis pin. If its just the pin that will be a result ( & a bit alarming)

Cheers, Jim

SE5a rebuild/rolling restoration - no brakes today

Thanks for the recent advice. I have now replaced the diff oil after removing part of the Watts linkage to get to the refill plug. I took the car for a 30 mile shake down yesterday. The car ran slightly roughly but without any major issue, leaks or drama. This morning I went to take the car for anot...

SE5a rebuild/ rolling restoration - 2 questions

Hi- thanks for your advice so far whilst I get my SE5a (VUL445M) back on the road again. I have recently rebuilt the engine, improved the gearbox selection and reinstalled the engine/gearbox. Of course I had a few setbacks/learning experiences on the way. The engine now starts and runs really well. ...

How does the overdrive inhibitor switch work?

I am rebuilding my SE5a. It’s a manual with overdrive and the later 3 rod box. Whilst the engine and gearbox are out, I wanted to check the inhibitor switch is operating properly. The switch has no continuity in its “relaxed” state and does have continuity as the lever is extended. However, I can’t ...

Do the Part numbers/ remarks column provide useful information?

The car is a SE5a with manual overdrive gearbox. I was referring to the parts book from QRG/GW.

Do the Part numbers/ remarks column provide useful information?

Hi - my engine rebuild is coming on slowly and I am enjoying the process (mostly) I am just about to refit the intermediate plate, the clutch and connect the engine and gearbox on the bench. I seem to be missing some bolts. If I look at the parts exploded diagram, I can see for example I should have...

What oil in SE5a 3 rod gearbox - alternative to SAE80?

Does anyone have the correct torque setting for the gearbox side cover? Also should I use any hylomar- type liquid gasket in addition to the new gasket. I could find any reference in the workshop manual. Thanks for your advice. Regards, Jim

What oil in SE5a 3 rod gearbox - alternative to SAE80?

Thank you for all the quick feedback. Looks like its GL4. Actually Halfords were stocking a Comma brand. Will check it out and delivery time from Amazon.

Thanks again, Jim

What oil in SE5a 3 rod gearbox - alternative to SAE80?

Hi - as part of my rebuild, I am changing the oil in the gearbox & O/D unit. The manual says SAE 80. At Halfords, they only have 70/80 or 80/90. Is one of those alternatives OK. I am guessing that with an old engine, there's no point in using synthetic or semi-synthetic. Thanks for your advice. Rega...
