Welcome to the Devon Noggin
Devon, with 8000 miles of roads can be an isolated place with grass in the centre of a single lane being the closest some get to a dual carriageway set up! Such locations, and perhaps health issues, make attending an evening meeting a challenge despite a desire to keep your car well sorted or to meet friends. A solution favoured by some is to attend our lunchtime ‘Saunter’ on the second Thursday of the month; usually meeting at 1230 at different venues, which will be communicated in advance, so being on my Noggin email contact list is critical as the locations are booked about two weeks in advance following discussion at the Noggin. Also, numbers attending are required in advance before I can make bookings.
So how can your local noggin help you? Several members have completed full body off rebuilds of all models, except perhaps the Middlebridge, and like most hand-built classics, forewarned is forearmed. Several of us have a shed load of spares for previous models we have owned and cherished and then moved on. Some people have the spares for the ‘project’ that never quite happened when they were physically able, but in work and never quite found the time. All will have knowledge of where parts may be available.
A friendly Noggin with chat that extends far beyond the mechanics of our cars, especially as the partners and spouses get involved – they keep us in check so that other things besides our cars are talked about.
The current venue has a reputation for good food, so several people will attend at 6.30 pm (1830) for meals with others arriving in time for the Noggin quiz, which starts about 8 pm (2000) in an area that the landlord to reserves for our use, but the activities have to be more muted than in the past due to the other dinners. That has not stopped Dennis at past Burn’s nights quoting the 'ode to a Haggis’!
The Welcome Stranger is closing as of 28th December and will not be re-opening until trading conditions are more stable and in compliance with Government guidance and rules.
