The standard Alternator on a Scimitar was OK as the technology of the time but having only 45 amp output it could cause problems if there is a high demand, i.e. Headlights, Wipers, Heater fan etc all being switched on at the same time. Also if a better radiator cooling fan is fitted this can be a big drain on power as it would normally come on when the car is sitting in traffic etc and so as the engine is turning at slow speed there would be a low output from the alternator and so the fan could cause a drain on the battery. There is a company who specialises in Minis and have a high output ( 70 amp ) alternator at a good price ( £67:00, May 2008 price ). This price includes vat and delivery. There is a slight difference between the existing alternator and the one from Mini Spares but this can be altered in 15 minutes very simply. The difference being the orientation of the mounting lugs. By undoing the three nuts on the three bolts, sliding out the bolts, rotating the front of the new alternator to match the existing one and refitting the three bolts and nuts is all that is needed. Undo the nuts and slide out the bolts, do not try to undo the bolts first. The reason being are the bolts have splined ends that engage in the body of the alternator so will not turn, undo the nuts and knock out the bolts, they will not need much of a thump. Make sure that you keep the front and rear of the alternator in place, do not allow them to come away from the main body. Not a big problem if they do, just requires unnecessary work. The only other difference is the hole that was for the bolt to the adjustment bracket is threaded, it is now one of the two main mounting holes so you may need to drill out the hole bigger depending upon the size of the bolt you are using, it will be very obvious when you look. The electrical connection to the rear of the alternator is the same, its just a few degrees different and will not cause a problem. One thing I strongly recommend is a larger ( Thicker ) wire from the new alternator to the battery. No need to replace the existing one just fit another one from the alternator to the battery. The reason is the existing wire as fitted to the Car may not be capable of taking the extra current ( amps ) from the new alternator.
