SE5 with V8 engine for sale

Post by cordner68 » Sun Apr 28, 2019 5:45 pm

1971 SE5 for sale - very reluctantly after sudden death of my partner last year.

We have had it since 1996 and it was worked on extensively shortly after that by Mike Thompson.
It has the Rover V8 engine rather than the original.
It has always been kept in the garage and taken out once or twice a week regularly. The other half looked after the moving parts well but the body and trim, not so much.
It is currently drivable but SORNd.

You can ask me anything you like about it but it is not my specialist subject but I will do my best. He kept all the paperwork and we have a garage with quite a few spare bits for it which are included in the sale.

£1200 or offers

Happy to arrange a viewing. Please PM if interested.
I'm in Reigate, Surrey.

I think you would be advised to take some advice from a club member near to you.

I believe the car could, dependant on overall condition,be worth a fair bit more than your suggested price.

Thanks for the advice! Anyone else like to comment? - I haven't advertised it anywhere else yet. It is priced according to one bit of advice I have had.

Condolences for your loss. Prices can be quite emotive but remember that you can’t go up during negotiations.

Not many pics or detail to go on but my gut says take it for an MOT and advertise it as widely as possible for £2500 ono if it passes or fails with a few easy fix bits?

I'd second what has been said above and would also pass on my sympathies - do not let this go for £1200 unless you are absolutely desperate for the space - worth £2k at the least providing nothing horrific is going on underneath.

good morning,

I too pass on my sympathies and can imagine that there are plenty of reasons for potentially wanting to move on the vehicle. Everyone's circumstances are different. But I do have an opinion regarding this which may or may not be useful to you.

I am no expert on Scimitars but I am struggling through a V8 conversion of my own at the minute so understand some of the costs and issues involved for me, time, ability and money being limiting factors mostly. As has been said, you may have a good reason to move quickly, in which case I can imagine there are plenty of people interested in this car at this price point and you will have no difficulty in selling.

Plenty of others on here have done the V8 conversion too and will know what I mean when I say that the engine and gearbox/bell housing alone are getting close to that sort of money nowadays (depending on the gearbox and condition of the engine etc). The condition of the car is of course important and without that information/pictures its a hard call. That is all without the time and skill required to do the conversion in the first place. I dont want to talk you out of a quick sale or from anyone else getting a great deal, but if you do have some time to get some advice then its worth considering in my opinion. It appears to be a real bargain for someone.

If I wasn't so far down the line with my own project I would have been in my car and heading south as we speak.

Good luck to you and any prospective purchasers and its a shame that it is under such sad circumstances the car has become available.

good luck, Ian.

If it is made of nuts and bolts I WILL take it apart..... going back together is a whole different ball game

I have sold the Se5 to a lovely club member who drove it home. I'm glad it has gone to a club member who will look after it and hopefully keep it going for another 25 years! Thanks to those of you who were interested in the car.

In other news, my Partner was one of the contributing editors on the magazine Modern Railways and we organised a special award in honour of him keeping the Se5 going as long as possible. It was the 'Golden Spanner Ken Cordner Reliant award' for the most reliable Pacer. Those of you who live in the north will know the particular rolling stock! Attached picture of me presenting it to Northern Rail at the awards event.

I have only just noticed this. The car isn't on the register, so if anyone can let me have the chassis number I'd appreciate it.
