early SE5

Hello,

I just bought a very early SE5, according to the seller the 9Oth car build,
registered NSD795G what makes it a 1968 car.
There is no paperwork with the car, it's been off the road for decades.
Can anybody help to identify it, and is it possible to get a new V5 ?
Where should the chassis number be stamped ?
As it's a very early example I would prefer to restore instead of breaking it.

Welcome Emile. I think you will find there are photos on the forum showing the position of the chassis number. However my personal experience on both a scrap chassis removed from my car and the replacement was that the chassis number was not to be found after much careful inspection. Perhaps neither was ever stamped at the factory. Reliant did seem a little ‘hit and miss’ on occasions.

If you know the registration, surely that is enough to get a "lost" V5?

As I said on Facebook - send a V62 to DVLA along with £25. There are new checks in place for cars that have been off the road for a long time, so you will need to provide pictures of the Chssis plate and engine number. As you don’t have these, you’re going to have to have a chassis plate made and either hope they’ll give you a V5 with no engine number, or buy an engine first. Note that they do now have teams that can request a visit to confirm those details.

Moral of the story is, ask first - buy later :D

Here's an image from Dave Poole's Sporting Reliants site which shows the location of the chassis number:

It's on the offside chassis leg near the water pump pulley (which you can just see in the photo). It should be there, but they were stamped fairly gently, so if the metal is very corroded it may have been eaten away? (and overly aggressive efforts to find it might remove it). If you're currently missing both a chassis plate and a V5, then presumably you don't currently know the chassis no., unless you have some other documentary evidence? If not, then fingers crossed that it does turn up on the chassis.

Applications for the V5c(w) are not as simple as some make out...usually the seller!!!

as well as what Jim mentions above the car will need a letter from club confirming build detail numbers, matching the pictures from the stamped in numbers, any documentation mot's excise discs to back up the claim, it will also need to have a CURRENT MOT before they will issues a v5c(w)..... some areas of the country have examiners "on trial" that are sent out to confirm details, at the applicants expense. If any of the numbers do not match the original registration details on their records you will not be issued the document . Even if it is an input error on their part,( I have a tractor falling into this bracket....) It is so important to keep DVLA updated with the number of changed engines, few people do and it causes problems later down the line....

I have recently been involved both privately with some of my vehicles and in my day job dealing with V5c(w) applications..... I would go as far as to say if a project has no current registration document ...walk away, the grief it can cause is unbelievable those that say its easy have clearly never been involved in the process.

incidentally It also isn't a given that DVLA will issues a New registration document on receipt of the old style v5's.... good luck

It is quite simple to get a replacement V5 from DVLA but they ask you for a chassis number as well as reg number , no chassis number no V5 . However if it’s been off road for a long time they may insist on a visit from a company called SGS who will inspect the cars identity .
However does a HPI check done via a reg number bring up a Chassis number , any dealers on here confirm that . ( Car dealers that is )
Also I have registered imported cars onto a first registration without a MOT if the car falls into a Historic category , so although a MOT was reqd it has changed .

With the new 40year exemption Roy, the checks are intensifying over cars that suddenly appear back on the system. This one is guaranteed a visit and Emile hasn’t mentioned that the car isn’t even in the UK!

If you download the form V62 from DVLA website it asks very basic information , I have used it and been successful many times however as I said if it’s been off the radar for a long time and not taxed it will trigger a inspection no doubt .
However if you are outside the UK forget it .

I’ve been talking to some people in the rebody/ kit car industry recently and they’ve had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get V5s changed when the donor car has been off the road for a while. DVLA are insisting that they provide pictures of the COMPLETE CAR before the replacement body was fitted (one triumph herald kit was refused because the photo showed it didn’t have headlights fitted!) - of course, many donor cars are little more than rolling chassis, so there’s been lots of poetic licence employed :D
