Ians GTC rebuild. Now she runs, and stops.

Post by GTC Ian » Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:25 am

Having sorted the brakes out and with thoughts of an MOT test getting closer, problems arose setting up the carb along with a badly fitting rotor arm. Its running very rich but I cannot cure the fault. Also I can get the car to tick over, and when I put it in gear it stalls (its an auto box). I increased the revs to 1500, put in gear and fine. Drove it down the road and back, smooth gear change etc and all gears working. Turned the revs down and it cuts out. Cleaned out carb ( I had a service kit for it) apart from crap in the float bowl, nothing else jumped out. So its back to the drawing board. It will have to take a back seat for a day or 2 as the SS1 will need getting ready for Silverstone next week and the caravan will need loading.

Rich running through the range is caused by the float level being too high. Either it is maladjusted or the fuel pressure is forcing the needle valve off its seat. Rich at idle will be either the wrong jets (should be 0.45 in a Weber) or emulsion tube blocked or wrong. Is it rich both banks? How far will the CO go down?

Yes its rich on both banks. No idea about the CO. The carb was working fine before the rebuild started.Mpg was good. Ive not re-jetted it as the carb was brand new when I bought it. But I will check the float level

After a break for getting Barbaras SS1 ready for Silverstone the 'C' kinda took a back seat. Further examination revealed a couple of potential causes. The power valve diaphram looked a bit iffy and when I put the carb on the surface table it revealed a bow of .3mm in the base. No way the gaskets would compensate for that.So a new power valve fitted and I machined the carb base.
Fitted back on the car and there was an improvement, but still having problems setting the idle. So Im just waiting for a selection of idle and main jets to arrive from Fast Road cars.
Sadly it means the car will not be at Curborough this year. Sorry Guy.

That's a shame, but better that it's running well than causing any further issue. Still there's next year... which should be a big birthday for the GTC :D

It's touch and go whether mine will make Curbs too, as it may be needing some engine tlc. I'll be there though.

After getting nowhere with the rebuilt and machined carb I went back over what I had done previously. Still believing it was an air leak causing the problem, I removed the inlet manifold and fitted a new gasket. Reset static timing and checked valve clearances. No difference at all . Out of shere desperartion refitted the old coil that had been on the car since I bought her 15 years ago. Bingo . Engine fired up first time and purred like a kitten. All that work fault finding and a brand new coil turns out to be duff. I fitted a new Lucas Sport coil last night and the engine sounds even better. The acid test comes on Friday when she is booked in for the MOT. The 6 mile journey to the garage will be the first time she has got further than the end of the road under her own steam for 20 months. Just a bit more fettling to do after that, like fit glass to doors ,fit door cards and one or two minor things then its time I tidied up the garage to see if I can find those bits I put in a safe place only for them to disappear for ever.

I would. But beware the are an arrogant lot. Didnt want to know when I complained. Although it had had only just been fitted they said its too bad as I had bought more than 12 months earlier.

You need to investigate "Consumer Regulations 2015" if you want to take it further.

Post by GTC Ian » Fri Sep 13, 2019 1:52 pm

Finally she now has an MOT. Just need to get home and put her in the garage.....they have started a programme of road re-surfacing here. Tar and chippings everywhere.
Just a few more jobs to do, but they can wait. Will be nice to drive her in the sun with the roof down. Its been 2 years since that last happened.
