Have you compared the shock absorbers to determine they are identical? Unlikely but someone could have substituted something odd into one side.

Tyre profiles same both sides?

was thinking that (shocks)..profiles are the same... :(

having said that the 'new' shock units were the exact the same length and construction, and i did install in the same orientation...

Well I dropped off the car for its MOT and spoke of the issue - they will take a thorough look for me

Good day folks,

picked up the car with new MOT .. :D , spoke with the chaps about the rear - they said nothing obvious was visible with the suspension setup etc, and they measured the difference at 3/4 inch .. :? :?
I will replace the fronts over the weekend and report back...

Good day folks

right....measurements are as follows:
ground to jacking, gap between arch and wheel top
NSF: 6", 2"
NSR 6",0.5
OSF:5.5", 1.5
OSR 5", -1.x "

so will be swapping units between sides today and remeasure on Sunday ....but seems conclusive ..?

step back a moment,

it would appear from above that there is only a small difference at the front? ie half inch at front
yet at the rear there is nearly one inch (now reduced to 3/4" after all the changes.

so if there was a problem caused by the front then surely the differnce would be as big or bigger there.

I'd ignore arch to wheel heights as the framing could be skewed , NB 'panel fit' only means that the panels were fitted, not always aligned , well possibly to the stars?

yes sir- that makes sense..my main concern is the rubbing of tyre on the arch...before the new springs and with a passenger we could hear and smell the tyre rubbing!..i have to say it's only occurred in the last six months and never noted the issue before.
Looking back at the images when i first bought the car, there is a slight difference , we will see what unravels over the weekend, i will remove the boot and take some measurements..

What age is the car? or to be more specific, does it have the early or late rear inner wheel arches? The later ones were wider and give slightly more clearance, especially if you've got wider wheels/tyres.

Morning sir, well it's an 85 model with standard 185/6o R14 tyres...what are the width differences?

dunno but I'm running 'bottle tops' with original arches on an 'early' 1985 version without issues, except if fully loaded then buffs top of arch on bigger bumps . . .

Unfortunately I can't remember when the changeover was. There are a number of references to it on the forum, eg here, but no changeover date. Now with standard tyres & wheels, it shouldn't matter (though it's worth noting that some tyres of the same spec can be different widths to others). However it might mean that you've got less margin for error, if something else is a bit out?

Good day,

i did not change the front springs as i had a trip up to Nottingham, however when i arrived i parked with the nearside on the kerb, and by chance noted that the offside arch gap was now the same as the nearside, i could get my hand between the tyre and arch....that makes no sense or logic to me... :? :? :?

confused
