do i have a piece missing? Speedo drive - resolved?

Post by Tinker man » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:39 am

good morning all,

basic question again, but i have tried to find an answer and failed so far, so its time to ask a friend.

last night i went to change the speedo drive on my 6a Auto C3. after some issues with the clamp on the gearbox end, i thought i was having success when i pulled the cable through and connected to the speedo head unit ok. then things took a turn for the worse at the gearbox end.

some history: the car when it came to me didnt have a working speedo. the needle bounced all over the shop. then stopped altogether. assumed cable and on looking underneath sure enough the cable had been dragging on the road and worn straight through. so piece of outer cable attached to gearbox end with no inner, and the rest still attached to the speedo dash unit. straight forward replacement then... it seems not and i am stumped.

as stated above clip end in the cabin sorted. but, the gearbox end is odd. the fitting on the outer cable of the new one is the same as the old one (see pictures). the clamp now modified to go over the new cable is fine and fits correctly. however when connected the square drive just pokes through the hole into the gearbox connected to nothing! on inspection it seems that the hole into the box is threaded. so my options are:

1. its the wrong cable and has the wrong gearbox end? are there different ones for manual and auto?
2. there is a piece missing in the gearbox that the cable should attach to? such as a cable drive piece....
3. the threaded piece i can see in the gearbox is actually a plug into the casing and should pull out (maybe on a seal of some sort)? and i can pull this out.
4. combination of the above
5. something different altogether

nothing fell out when i removed the old one, and how did the speedo work before, albeit bouncing.. perhaps just dragging on the road was turning the cable? so what seemed an easy job has me stumped. all help gratefully received as ever. i do seem to be asking a lot of questions! i dont know what to do next. hopefully th epictures make sense.

thank you, Ian.

Looks like you’ve already got the remains of a cable in the gearbox?

Delay my last - I think that’s the actual speedo drive (gear).

do i have a piece missing? Speedo drive

Post by Tinker man » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:50 am

hi Phil,

do you think that this should "pull" out with a bolt threaded into that hole? therefore i have the wrong end on my new cable? or would this be a separate piece that picks up the drive from the gearbox and something is missing?

thank you, Ian.

There are different drives available so I think you need to count the teeth on the one you have to start with. Some (type 9?) are colour coded.

Hi Jim,

that is where the problems start... i only have the piece that is in the gearbox, which seems to be incomplete. i will remove what i have and see where that takes me.

no doubt i will be back on in due course!

thanks again

Ok. Now I have removed the drive from the gearbox I understand what you were telling me.

I need a cable with a different end to screw into the drive or a piece that screws onto the drive unit. As the one I have won’t engage. call to GW tomorrow. At least I do have a drive unit😀

Appreciate the patience. Ian.

The cable is correct - I didn’t know the outer part of the drive screwed in?
