Yellow Peril On-Track at Goodwood 76MM 17-03-2018 + Photos

Post by Roger Pennington » Sun Mar 11, 2018 8:41 pm

As you may be aware, next weekend (17-18/03/2018) is the Goodwood 76th Members' Meeting. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Goodwood Road Racing Club (GRRC). In order to celebrate the anniversary, the GRRC announced that they were looking for a selection of members' cars for a track parade each day, to showcase the diversity of cars within the club, and inviting applications to join in. I'm happy to say that my application was accepted, so I will be in Saturday morning's parade with the Yellow Peril. :D So, I shall have to be up at the crack of dawn for the parade, which is due to start at about 0820, and will last for two laps.

Thanks all :D

Unfortunately I don't think we'll be able to really let rip, as it is a parade, but it should be a really diverse and interesting range of cars, judging by some of the people I know who are in it, either on the Saturday or the Sunday. Apart from mine, these other cars include a Fiat Multipla (the original '62 one), an Austin Healey Sprite, a TVR Chimera, an Aston Martin Vantage N430, and a Triumph TR2. :D

So, the event took place, as expected, but with the addition of an unwelcome visitor in the form of the "mini beast from the east", which meant that it was insanely cold and snowy - especially on Sunday. As it turned out, I got lucky with the weather, as Saturday morning was just cold, everything else came later.... I had to be up at "daft-o-clock" in order to get to the circuit at shortly after 7:00am to park-up on the Lavant straight to sign-on and get ready. After signing-on, we were allowed to go off to find shelter, refreshments, or take photographs, as long as we were back by 8:00 to get ready. I wandered off, to the area around Woodcote, and bumped into Bill Brighton, getting ready for a day of marshalling :D After a quick chat, Bill went off to go to his post, and I returned to take a few photos of some of the cars forming up: (certainly a varied selection! :D )

At 8:15 we were told to start our engines and drive round to the starting grid, where we formed-up in fairly tightly-packed rows. At 8:20 we got the signal to start, and set off for our two laps of the track. I was immediatel behind a 3-Litre Bently, and on my left was a new McLaren - a good indication of the variety. It all went well, and everyone survived without mishap. Afterwards the marshals directed us off the track to our respective parking areas, and on the way I passed Sue and Steve with their Yellow Se5a JYY so exchanged a wave :)

For these photos of us forming-up on the grid, I'm grateful to a couple of my fellow Goodwood Photographers:

I had a friend there from Plymouth - quote "Now spending a extra night here as roads blocked - I have never been so cold". Not as hardy as you by the sounds of it Roger.

Roger, what a fantastic selection and some great photos. YP looks stunning and certainly stands out. I love these parades, Prescott often does something similar.

I'm not too convinced of the heritage of the Simca 1100 estate though, other than it's probably the only one left in the UK.

I hope the driver of the Austin Seven Ulster was wearing some good thermals! :)

Peter, I don't know that I'm particularly hardy as such, but there's an old saying "there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!"and I think there's probably some truth in that. I was well wrapped-up with a full set of thermals, fleece lined trousers over the them, a thick shirt, a fleece, an RSSOC soft shell gillet, and a thick puffa jacket over the top. A fleece motorbike neck tube and a sheepskin flying helmet topped it all off. I looked more like the Michelin man than my normal matchstick man look, but fitted-in perfectly with the general setting. And it was still cold. Anyone who hadn't prepared, would have been in trouble, especially on Sunday.

Thanks David, it always surprises me, the range of interesting cars found in the GRRC. Each year we have a Members' Open Day, at Goodwood house, in August. About 40 or so members are invited to display their cars on the carriage circle outside the front of the house. It's been held since about 2003 (or maybe 2002), and every year the cars have been different. :D They're not all exotics though, but they've all been rare, or unusual, or with an interesting story to tell.

We went on saturday, missed your car on track but did find it on display. Looked very smart.

Boy was it cold - every year I comment on how next year has to be warmer... but its always one notch colder! At least it wasn't raining, and racing cars in the snow made for a great spectacle.

Sorry I missed you Nick - normally I go back to the car for sandwiches and a flask of tea at lunchtime, but this time the prospect of bangers and mash in the great hall, in the warm and out of the wind, proved irresistible! As it happened I ended up sat next to Stuart Graham and his wife, he's the only man to win TTs on both two wheels and four. He was driving the Brut 33 Camaro as usual, (a replica of the car he used when he won the TT on four wheels, in '74 and '75), but it was sidelined by a problem, so he'd been reduced to the role of spectator :(

It was even colder on Sunday - you got the warmer day! (actually the first year was warm, but it's been cold for all the others)

Just received a great photo taken by Erik van der Schaaff, a member of our Goodwood photographic group, showing the cars on their way to form up on the grid:
