Updating ignition?

Post by simmit » Wed Oct 11, 2017 10:45 am

As plug leads and coil seem like originals and are now best part of 30 years old I'm considering fitting new (then holding the old items as emergency spares) and whilst about it hopefully improving the ignition with better components. So:-
(1). Is it worth buying best quality leads (8mm Magnecor cost about £90, similar(?) Burton leads £50)?
(2). Coil? There are so many types and makes on offer I'm bamboozled! Firstly, which type of coil do we have for the 2.9i Is it 9V or 12V and is a ballast resistor required? Which particular type is it ( 'Constant energy", "ballasted or non-ballasted", whatever, etc., etc.). Also, Is high energy coil worthwhile (MSD Blaster £65, NGK £25)?
Comments welcomed.

Magnecor are worth the extra money IMO - I've got them on two cars. As for the coil best to look for a Scorpio/Granada 2.9i coil and buy the best one - no ballast resistor fitted to the MB's

These people have always been extremely helpful for leads in different qualities and colours:

(There used to be a different website for Performance Leads but it just directs to the Fast Lane site now.)

"No ballast resistor". Does that mean it's a 12V coil not 9V or is it t'other way round?

Just a small caveat... Magnecor leads are very nice, until there is a waranty claim. Their attitude is that the leads are either perfect or have been abused and do not like having to replace leads with loose connectors under warranty.
