BTW the fascia knob I asked about ages ago with the loudspeaker symbol on it IS a front/rear fader. Needed a scoosh of WD to get it going!

Do not use WD40 on electrical contacts. It dries leaving an insulating film. ( I once had someone on a ship squirt many many relays/contacts in an intercom system with it......it took a great long time to individually clean off each individual set of contacts after the system had started becoming very erratic....a few hundred contacts.) Electrical contact cleaner followed by a slight smear of electric contact grease is what you need.

Point taken Dennis but the stiffness was in the 'bearing' of the fader shaft rather than the leccy bits. In any case the contacts are sliding rather than make and break so I hope all will be well.

In other news I've got the wiring for the XJS mirrors sorted out, bit of a headscratcher dealing with 4 different wiring colours but got there in the end. If anyone else wants to try there's a guide in the 'How to' section.

Looks like I've found how to post pics, sorry it's 90deg. out..

Going back to the posts about the damp plywood in the footwell walls I think I've found the leak -

if you can see the little blue dot away down there in the darkness, that's daylight from one of the holes (which I always thought were drains) in the body sills. Needless to say the holes, and the others at the back end of the sills, will be having plastic plugs fitted!

Another thing - does the steel strip along the bottom of the wall serve any useful purpose other than holding the ply in place? It only goes as far as the triangular brace on the passenger side..

Is it the steel strip that goes all the way to the back seat belt area - sandwich in the floorpan.
Also supports the door post hinge structure

ARD126K.....ref XJS Mirrors.......were my drawings of any help or were they too difficult because of the hand sketched nature........these are the ones pined that I sent fairly recently showing what switch did what and which wires (colour) connected to which for each movement of each switch; and also full circuit diagram for the mirrors/switches.

Ronnie - yes it dives under the GRP at the door and runs along the lip for the seal and comes out again behind the door, stops just in front of the rollbar/belt mount. It must be a bit of strengthening (side impact? :)

Dennis - your drawings were very helpful in giving me the courage to start the swap to Jag mirrors, and finding out which wire did what. Many thanks for taking the trouble. In the event I went for the Ford-type switch which of course introduced another set of wiring colours...... I'm hoping that once the car starts to be reassembled after painting that the switch will go in the driver's door above the loudspeaker.
