Sons Audi A3 1.8 petrol.

Post by b.c.flat hat » Sun Jul 02, 2017 9:39 pm

I'm a relic, don't know moderns at all so can't help him. However, there's whizz kids on 'ere wot can.

Starts ok, no warning lights on the dash, drives alright on a very light throttle but has little power when pedal is pressed. Will eventually slowly accelerate up to motorway speeds given time. He's changed the rear lambda sensor, no change.

What does he look at next? Crusty.

Next thing is to interrogate the computer for error codes.

101 possible problems - not all will bring on the light on the dash.

You'll need something that can talk to the car and get the (any) codes first - a £20 code reader might help but an ELM327 dongle and a good phone App will tell much more (like is the throttle opening enough..).

The idea of giving £50 to a specialist (and I don't mean a main dealer) just to plug it in to tell you what it might be may hurt, but it's a lot cheaper than blindly changing parts.

Noddy came over this evening as I've got a Delphi DS100 diagnostic tool but it wouldn't talk to his 2002 A3!
So back to first principles
- ran fine at idle
- ran fine on very light throttle up to 2500 rpm
- missed on medium/heavy throttle & will not rev
- fuel air issue!
- plugs all clean & correct colour
- checked the intake pipework no splits or leaks
- unplugged the AFM & the car rev'ed freely
- tried cleaning it but it's knackered!

Still it should be easier to drive home with it disconnected!

Europart in Leeds have one in stock so he can pick it up & swap it out next week at his leisure.
