Has anyone put the new rubbers on a car yet?

While having a go at sealing the rubbers on the GTE, I put one of the new ones on to see what it was like. I'm not too sure they will seal well (if at all) because they are quite rigid

Old and new. The new one has a much more prominent curve

Here you can see the effect of the bigger curve. The sides hit the body first so there is a gap at the top and bottom

I may have a go at fettling them when they go on the Coupe

Maybe stick some emery onto something with the right sort of curve (oil drum?) and rub to get the curve somewhere near, then assemble with sealant. I wonder whether it would be good to use a thin stainless steel washer under the nut too?
Btw I did slip mine onto the spindles & noticed the curve wasn't quite right, but thought it was just a peculiarity of my car & decided to leave fitting them for another day...

I did wonder that and figured that when tightening them up, they should spread to seal?

Shaved a bit of plastic off the lower sides with a Stanley knife & it sits pretty flush now, apart from the very bottom (hard to tell though in this pic) so will have to fettle a bit more. I'll need to take a bit off the top too, probably best done with the belt sander, so the nut will have some threads to screw onto

If the surround is as hard as seems it might be a good idea to trim a bit more off and also fit a thin rubber seal between it and the body, give it something to compress and ensure a decent watertight seal

I've been thinking along the same lines & going to look at self adhesive puncture repair patches next time I'm near a bike shop. I could stick them on the base of the bezel & then trim the excess off with a scalpel :) On my car I ended up trimming about 1.5mm off the bezels bottom on the windscreen side tapering to zero on the bonnet side to get it to sit parallel to the shaft

Something tells me either the material isn't quite the same, or the original used for the mould wasn't its original shape..

I have a belt sander, no not much of an issue for me.

Yes, the new ones are a lot harder compound Phil, more like plastic than rubber. I wrapped some masking tape around the bezel & marked where I needed to remove material as its easy to take too much off with the belt sander

Or it'll sling it across the garage where it's bound to hit the newly painted panel or fitted glass

as you may have heard or noticed i have made these front wheelbox outer bushes a couple of months ago and they are now readily available. i haven't read the entire thread, but i gather you mean partnumber 17193. the ones made now used the original as a pattern and are exact copies, but from black nylon instead of the rubber compound as before. these will last the rest of your cars life if not longer. please get in touch if you are interested. also just reproduced are the ignition lead clips for the essex rocker cover and bushes for the C3 auto gearchange handle. regards to all, geert van hout

Will the nylon mold or bend to the profile of the body the way rubber does please ?

Any pictures of them fitted please

Steve, windy's post has an as fitted picture, think you'll need to dress to suit and put a flexible layer below to seal them eg rubber
