The End of Brighton Speed Trials? - Saved!

Post by scimjim » Sun Dec 22, 2013 12:27 pm

I've never been to this event but hate to see events canned if the safety and environmental impact can be kept to an acceptable level - copied this from another forum so apologies if it's already on here and I missed it:

During the speed trials in 2012 a lady rider on a combination was killed. The inquest had not been held so the event did not take place this year in case the coroner made some recommendations on safety. However, since then the green party lead councillors of the Economic Development & Culture Committee have decided that the speed trials should not take place in the future and they have already pencilled in an alternative event for the day in September when the trials would normally take place. They have also decided that there should be an event to ‘Celebrate ‘ the end of the speed trials!!!!!!!

There has been no full council involvement in this decision.

There is an e-petition on the Brighton and Hove city website and I ask as many of you as possible who care about such things to sign the petition to keep an event that has been part of Brighton and motor sport in this country since 1905.

This could also mean the end of the Brighton and Hove Motor club as it is their main event and income for the year.

We need at least 1250 signatures to get a full council debate.

Please sign up before the deadline date of 23rd January 2014. Thanks

I recall seeing something (might have been on here) about the cancellation and the possible permanent cancellation of it.

Brighton Speed Trials was a magical event. We competed there a few time with our Coupé in the late 1990's. The event, at that time, was 1/4 mile standing start, and we used to do it in about 15 seconds which we were pleased with. But some, particularly the bikes, were doing 10 or so seconds which was always pretty scary looking. It was one of the few events we did where there were masses of spectators. It would be very sad if it were to end.

Signed. Looks like they've already got enough signatures.

If it carries on, I'd definetly do it next year. Good excuse to see the brother :)

Signed. I remember this event from the 1960's. It was pretty hairy then . The trouble seems to be that so many people -especially local politicians- fail to realise that motorsport in any form is potentially dangerous. That fact is normally printed on admission tickets, programmes, etc. If people choose to accept the risk, they are choosing to accept the consequences. Life has always been like that - at least, it was always like that before "Elfin Safe Tea" movement gained the patronage of the "Nanny State". This is yet another attempt to move motorsport further away from the general public (read"Joe Soap", ie: people like us) and cocoon it in purpose-built , high-cost, insulated stadiums(stadia?) like football . Where will it all end? How on Earth is "Joe Soap" and his family supposed to enjoy their weekend sport at minimal cost , at venues accessible to all? Is that a crime? Is it a selfish, anti-social desire? -or is it just politically incorrect? I am fed-up with the seemingly endless "motor-car bashing" which some people, for lack of any other intelligent pastime, seem to regard as their"public duty". Ok, we all know that motorcars are noisy, polluting, dangerous contraptions. They are also the most desired possession on the planet, made in vastly greater numbers than any other man-made machine, and adored like false gods by countless miilions of people around the world. So why shouldn't we have a bit of fun with them?
End of gripe.

It looks as though "People Power" has triumphed and the event will be going ahead - BBC News Report. So, all who signed the petition should give themselves a big slap on the back, in thanks. :D
