Motorsport Books - Recomendations & Reviews

Post by nickkeyser » Wed Sep 18, 2013 12:53 pm

I thought I would start a place for people to list and review books or ask for recomendations on certain things. Post anything that a compie may find interesting or useful; a reading list if you like. Please also feel free to comment on anything anyone else has posted.

Please try to follow the format to ensure its easy for people to go out and find these books if they choose too.

Competition Car Suspension: A Practical Handbook

Author: Allan Staniforth
Date: 4th Revised edition (18 Oct 2006)
ISBN-10: 1844253287
ISBN-13: 978-1844253289

Recomended to me by Craig, it offers a good grounding as to what your suspension does and what you want from different setups. I'd say it was relevant to fast road cars as much as competition cars - a bit of a car suspension bible.
May be a bit basic for some but its nice and easy to understand, and gives you the grounding you need to understand the more advanced stuff.

Professional Race Driving Techniques (Speed Secrets)

Author: Ross Bentley
Date: 1998
ISBN-10: 0760305188
ISBN-13: 978-0760305188

Ross Bentley has a huge range of driving books out there but this is both the first book of his, and about driving that I've read. Its a fairly good read, although starts a bit like a self help book - but I think that may just be the american style. Its certainly helped me understand what I'm trying to do in the car and teach myself some techniques so I'm glad I read it, but it is a bit repetitive and sometimes a little wishywashy.
Being american and aimed at circuit racing, some of it wasnt really relevant to british speed events but its interested to read all the same.
In summary, I'd say there are probably better books out there for the likes of us doing hills and sprints if your looking for the ultimate 'how too guide' but its a good starting point I'd say. This is of course also only how the author thinks its best to drive fast, so its probably worth reading a few different books by different authors and making up your own mind.

few more serious ones...

the other Allan Stanniforth 'bible'--the resource for compies imho, easy to understand, forget the likes of Milliken & Milliken, this is proper 'clubbie' level and relevant to hills and sprints mostly

this is hugely interesting for those that go over 100mph (small sports only I assume?? )
written by Simon McBeath who writes simply and yet in depth so that even numpties like me can understand the hugely complex but fascinating subject of aero

bit leftfield as none of our cars are bike engine, but the fabrication methodology is great and relevant to sprints/hills

another useful aero book, but this time from a yank, not the newest work out there, but covers clubbie level to US top level Indy car/NASCAR as well as Autosolos (sort of US sprinting)
