Post by Coupe Racing » Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:59 pm

Hi

Is it possible to take all my files inc Windows 7 from my old hard drive and migrate it to a replacement?

Many thanks for your time

Yes,

I know little about computers, but when my windows 10 machine's hard drive died the computer shop put in a new drive for me, as part of this process they transferred all my files across. I ended up with a new Windows 10 operating system but with all my files intact. I don't think they where able to actually clone my hard drive due to it being very broken.

not normally you can remove all the generated files such as docs and pics etc, but usually the operating system has to be reloaded to your new drive to function properly.

Buy a SSD while you are on. If your "original" drive is ok then you can fit it in your pc as a E or F drive - or whatever you have not got already then transfer the files across. Your new drive has to have the operating system on before you do this of course. I have a external drive which I keep updated with my files - just in case.

I've not done it for a few years, but I used to regularly make Windows HDD images using Norton Ghost. This image could then be transferred to a new drive as a carbon copy of the original.

I did it a few weeks ago on my iMac using a similar piece of software.

In a word yes. The new drive is cloned from the original, so everything should work as well or as badly as before. It is sometimes worth doing a clean install for the performance benefit.

Many SSD's you can buy these days come with dedicated cloning software to make it easy...
