Calling iPad owners..

Post by philhoward » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:32 pm

It's approaching the festive season, so SWMBO hints she needs a new iPad..

We've both been running iPad 2's for a couple of years - mine seems to be OK apart from occasional stutters since iOS 9 but hers seems to have a habit of crashing apps (mainly Safari), so looking at the iPad Air family. Is the Air 2 worth the jump over a normal Air, given we are coming from an A5 chip-based one?

We aren't going Android any time soon - we have iPhone 6's now and recently entered the world of an iMac as well - so no talking of it not being an iPad!

Hi Phil
If you're really set on using apple my advice would be always go for current generation hardware. Apple products suffer from built in obsolescence far more than any other manufacturer imho. I escaped from the clutches of apple several generations ago for this reason alone.

I had the air and now air 2. Personally, I think the screen image quality and sound make it a very worth while upgrade!!!

We upgraded from iPad 2 to iPad Air and the difference is night and day, we upped the amount of internal storage (16 to 32 - we also went to one with a SIM card as it was no more expensive) as our usage broadened from just Sainsburys.com almost as soon as the iPad 2 arrived.

Whether the Air 2 is worth the difference I couldn't say it does look like they are moving to a 2 year cycle on them so it would suggest that buyers aren't responding to the 1 year cycle or development is slowing.

Ours came from one of the high street 2nd hand places (CEX or GAME) and came with a reasonable enough warranty. If you can get one around a year old you can extend the apple care.

Buy the newest you can afford with the biggest memory application and expect it to be replaced in about 4 or so years due to Apples wonderful thou shalt upgrade on a regular basis ideology

Did you notice much improvement?

I expect the iPad air to be sufficient - SWMBO has a 64Gb at the moment but as she uses the Mac and phone for music, a 32Gb will probably suffice. Question remains if it's worth the extra £120 for the Air 2..

I bought the last one through the Apple refurb shop and no problems with it. They only have the Cellular versions available at the moment, but should we be away from a wifi source we have the phones for tethering anyway with are 4G.

Over the air, yes. It is quicker, screen quality is amazing and sound is better too. I use mine quite heavily for work aswell as play! I have the cellular version as when I go to rallies, I want to be able to do business aswell :)

Cheers James.

If you're overnighting in Stoke any time soon and have room for the press, give me a shout - based on your FB checkins I saw, you were a mile from me.. ;)

The biggest benefit of my Air 2 compared to my old 2 (and the standard air) is the anti reflective screen. It's worth most of the extra cost alone imo

I did realise that last time, this last hospital trip was a nightmare as you may have seen! I wasn't supposed to be driving and don't think the press would of got in the GTE lol

Mrs K has expressed an interest in the mini - any thoughts? I plan to get an air 2 soon (or at least my company does :-))

Only if you have small fingers - had a play with the demo unit somewhere. Could be that I'm too used to the "normal" one though!

I thought you'd be tempted by the Pro, Jim?

I have a windows laptop for work stuff (MSoffice mainly) an iPad 2 that rarely gets used outside of the front room and an i-phone (that gets used everywhere - I'm currently using it in Berlin), can't see the need for a pro - what's the benefit apart from a huge screen?
