Might have to look at mine then - to be fair, it's been a sideboard ornament for the last 2 1/2 years (can do 99% of things I need to on the iPad, and use the works laptop for the other 1%) but it would be nice to get it up and running again at some point. Mine's a similar vintage (2012 I think) but I have a feeling it might already be an SSD. Will have to check now!

I would contact the Apple help line. They are very good.

I made a backup using “super duper” and just mirrored it back onto the new drive.

Biggest job was accessing the drive as you have to remove the screen.

Mine is a mid 2010 27” i3 3.2ghz. The difference in operating speed now is unbelievable. I upgraded the RAM from 4-8gb a while back, but it only made a very slight difference.
A new Mac would be nice, but the only benefit I can see, is that it’ll be able to edit 4K video. Currently I don’t need to do that.

I would be doing this on a windows PC; Bernie's always seemed very slow but it may be a setup issue

Not done an HDD swap on Win PC for a very long time. I used to use Norton Ghost, not sure if that still exists or works with Win 10. I believe there's a way of doing it using the backup option in Win 10 itself, but you may need to download a disk image of W10 from the Microsoft website and have your product key available (If you don't know your product key, there's a command you can use in the DOS window to pull it up).

Windows 10 includes image and fle backup utilities which are quite effective - which is a first for Microsoft! Try Start > Settings > Update & security> Backup for a data backup and Control Panel > Backup and Restore (it might say Windows 7 after but ignore that!) for a complete disk image.

When you restore the image/data MS should remember that you are entitled to any OS update but it is worth getting your key just in case. The key found by using the command prompt will be the original stored in the BIOS by the PC manufacturer and will not be the correct key if you have upgraded to a later OS. However, use the freeware program Magic Jellybean freeware key finder and this will give you the correct key.

If you've got a working old hard drive and the blank new one and a a free sata cable and port, acronis can mirror image the old drive data to the new, and even "lock it off" so you just have a windows install drive and a data/media drive taking the rest of the space.

Plug both in, tell it to mirror the windows one to the new one, let it work it's magic, then once its done just disconnect the old drive and off...you....go

I can recommend the Hirens boot disk for cloning hard drives etc. Ive been in the game for over 20yrs and always end up coming back to Hiren as it contains a Ghost / Acronis / and loads of other utilities which I cant even remember most of them.

If you need a copy - send me a PM, ive got the latest version and will send you a disk for the cost of postage etc.

Cheers

Mike
