M3 straight 6

Research is needed but that was the idea, or possible the Lexus lump. Maybe even 350Z engine..

Depends what comes my way for the right price really

Yep all about weight reduction and simplicity really :)

Plus on the hills you can't really beat the in gear flexibility of low down torque.

What a gorgeous setup- that manifold is something else. Mind you, I heard 2jz's are pretty weighty? Would certainly make the right noises though 8)

I suspect a 300BHP NA rotary would be very fragile? Based on the fact that a standard 230 odd is quite fragile compared to anything else mentioned in this thread :-)

350z motor is a co-op with Renault. Gearboxes are really tough and quite big (same as rb25 size) in fact it's z33 box whereas the RB was the z32 box so similar family.
370z box is tougher still but deeper

I understand from a rotary enthusiast that many of the rotary engine issues stem from people using cars for short trips, not fully warming them up before revving them and using the wrong oil spec. In short, rotary engines can be reliable if treated the way that suits them (not necessarily the way it suits the user of the car on a day to day basis).

1UZ-FE is a fantastic engine in terms of design and build quality. Most come out of a Lexus barge and have been run in at a max 3500 rpm for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Mating a suitable gearbox can be the most expensive bit and pfaffing getting the clutch perfect so it doesn't drag, but close to 300bhp in stock form, 6 bolt mains, what's not to like. Standard internals reported to easily take over 700bhp and Ultima with twin turbo's claimed at over 1000bhp on stock engine, albeit with earlier con rods. You can even use the later VVTI if you want more complexity.

The torque is brilliant and the sound even better. Surprised there aren't more used in sprinting given it seems such a cheap and plentiful power plant for now.

Ellington
The drivability in your Altezza was luverly, no turbo motor will come close to that ease of delivery 8)
