Did these two cars ever compete at the same time?

Post by MarkHawkins » Tue Mar 14, 2017 5:21 pm

Did HBL 725G and OPJ 62R ever compete at the same event and if so are there times / results recorded for them? If they did, I think it would be from the early 1980's to the early 1990's.

You could get some idea by sifting through the late Geoff's competition results archive which is on this site on the homepage in the competition section - here's a direct link. A quick look at a couple of Goodwood events in 1986 shows Shaun Byrne and Dave Phillips both listed. However, while you can be pretty sure which car Shaun was driving, it may be more tricky for Dave? :)

I'd completely forgotten about that archive of competition results dating back to the early days Roger.

It looks like it resides on Geoff's own web pages. Is access to it safe now that Geoff is no longer with us?

Probably worth someone taking a copy (they're all downloadable I think) "just in case"?

Thanks - so it appears the Coupe was quicker on that occasion but at Ragley Hall, the GTE was slightly faster.

If it was Dave Philip's 6, then it now resides with John Plumb and has grown a silver stripe iirc

Hi All,

I have now downloaded all of Geoff's results to keep in the club archives.

If anyone has future annual results then I'll add them to the archive.

Many Thanks

Dave Poole :D

Thanks for doing that, Dave :D

Re "Dave's Se6" it was my understanding that there are two of those.

"ORY" was the full-on modprod car, now owned, as Craig says, by John Plumb. (was this always "modified", or did it start in "roadgoing" and move to "modified" later?)

Also there was "OPJ", which was more of a road car. How much, if any competition he did in OPJ, I don't know.

Maybe the class he was running in might give a clue, or if there's a tie-up to the dates of ownership? (perhaps he bought ORY in 19XX to modify, to avoid modding OPJ any more?). The odd few results I looked at didn't mention the car, only the driver, that's why I made the remark about difficulty in identifying the car.

ORY came from Robin Rew already modified, I understand. OPJ was bought in 1980 as standard then modified. Both are 1977 registered cars, I think, so that also makes it hard to tell them apart in results tables. From the results, what I find interesting is that Shaun's Coupe HBL was never so heavily modified as either of DPs cars (no LSD, no big valve heads, roller rockers etc) but was putting in similar or better times.

A Coupe is a lot lighter than a 6, say 10% makes quite a difference.

Well done Dave, for securing the competition archive.
Going off piste a little, is there a move to preserve all the other stuff Geoff had? The last time I visited him he showed me the board he used for wiring looms, as well as lots of bits and pieces. Stuff like this ought not to end up in a skip.

Hi Philip,

I spoke to a number of people at Geoff's funeral and was told that his Sabre/Scimitar stuff was being sorted through by a number of RSSOC people, so I'm sure it would all get put safe.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Thanks for replying, that's good to know. Can't wait to see a catalogue of what's available, no harm in getting a few bits, just in case.....
