Helmet Designs

Post by nickkeyser » Mon Aug 26, 2013 5:36 pm

I fancy adding something to my helmet as its just plain white. Would cause less confusion as to whos in the car at testing etc.

Am I OK to just get some vinyl stickers cut, or do I need to use special stickers? I'm sure I read somewhere about the adhesive damaging the gel-coat on some helmets so want to check before I go and do something that is going to mean the scrutes don't like it. If I can do it, ill get my mate to sort the stickers for me and post the result here.

feel free to post any cool designs here too, ill start with one from a legend. The colours of his old school.

And vettels helmet from 2013 monaco, aparently the bikini is in special paint and disappears when the helmet warms up. Not sure if he wore it or not?

I think adhesive affects the cheapo polycarbonate helmets which some are not motor sport approved. Proper ones are fibreglass of course so should be inert.
I'm not an expert though.

Nick it mentions the adhesive issue in 10.3.3 section f on page 168 of the 2013 Blue Book. Not a definitive no :? but looks like you risk the roth of a scrutineer at some point possibly maybe :?

Edit

Section f is in relation to "moulded plastic helmets" which presumably can still meet MSA standard or why mention them :?

I thought that "proper" ones are spray painted rather than using stickers?

I've painted and stickered them in the past, but never a polycarbonate one.....carbon / Kevlar etc are ok.

Cheers guys. I know the 'proper' job is painted, but I dont want a full all over colourscheme. What I have in mind is basic and single colours.

My helmets a Bell Sport 4 - so not a cheapy one, and not poly carb (i dont think...?).

Maybe I need to contact the MSA and Bell for calrification.

If you need confirmation of any adhesive (and the stickers themselves), have a word with our own speedy555 - does great member discounts ;)

I would expect a bell to be fibreglass as a minimum, probably a carbon/Kevlar mix. You can usually see a seam in a poly helmet, inside under the padding where the 2 halves are bonded together.

Bens is identical to mine, thats what got me thinking - along with the confusion that comes with my bother Jim and I shareing a car a lot, and both haveing similar 'outfits'.

If we dont think the scrutes will care/it wont damage the helmet, Ill get my graphic designer mate to do the designs for me, and ping them off to speedy.

On a similar note, a friend who hill climbed a rotory pwered westfield recently his 4 yr old Bell was covered in microblisters. It had been stored in his garage, which was probably slightly damp, and nearish to some solvent based chemicals, but that shouldnt really effect it. Bell admited that it was faulty but out of warranty, but did give him something towards a replacement.

Afaik, there's no specific vinyl for the job, but the best quality (20 year if feeling flush) will go around the curves better as its more stretchy.
I had a helmet that was pretty good and only worn once, but 12 months in the shed and it had blisters to match any scim :)

Thanks speedy. I was wondering if the curves would be an issue. Im only thinking somthing simple like name and stripes, similar to James Hunts. Other ideas included crash test circles on the sides, or RAF roundels or a big star on either side could be effective.

What format do you need the designs in to be able to cut the vinyl?

be careful using military logos - a couple of years ago they had a crackdown on copyrighting, even against MoD personnel using them in an unofficial manner.

Dick Hulbert used to have a pink 'lid with the crash test symbols on the side, looked ace

Jim, thats worth knowing! I was slightly unsure about military symbology anyway, being that Im nothing to do with the MOD!
