Rear hatch catch pin

Post by gtcse8 » Sun Jun 23, 2019 7:04 pm

Hi Chris
ALL SE6 onwards will fit ALL cars.

My factory parts list only shows Two numbers for the SE6>, plain and tinted. :|

Where the Chrome on brass fitted to MB has come from I don`t know, most of the SE6 frames I have come across are SS, may be that the SS supplier had shut/refused to supply low numbers?,
ALL the SE5 frames were chrome on brass and when the SE6 was introduced Reliant made a decision to cut back on expensive to supply components, this is widely publicised in the Reliant development histories, so they moved to thin steel pressings/mouldings for Glass frames :?

My last Anti Rattle block went to Mick, but it was basically a Triangular plastic moulding with a groove for the Top Hat of the pin to sit into.

Had a look today and I have quite a few rear hatches, but ALL S/H and All SS for SE6> or Chrome/brass for SE5

Rear hatch catch pin

I was out in the garage a little earlier, and I thought "I could take a photo of my hatch catch for Chris". I was thinking more of the possibility of wear (I think some is almost inevitable, given the way it operates). Anyway, here's the photo, it also shows the anti-rattle block in situ :)

Rear hatch catch pin

Oh, and a further thought about fitment - AFAIK the Se5/5a won't fit the later cars, because the 5-series were a few inches narrower :)

as Roger says, this is a bit misleading, SE6, 6a, 6b and Middlebridge are the same. SE5/5a are narrower.

I see what you mean, but actually I read it as Mark intended, that SE6 will fit that and all later GTE versions. Many thanks to you all for all this information, it is most helpful :D

Prior to seeing the anti-rattle block picture but thinking about where it must sit, I realised part of its function is to stop the frame twisting on closure. So I tried bending the frame a bit, and it's fairly scary how much it can twist. Until recently when I started all this work, getting the hatch to close was a black art, but as soon as I took the old seal out it became much easier. Today as I closed it I twisted the handle/frame upwards slightly so that the latch pin was held square to the latch, instead of being pushed upwards by the latch mechanism. It closed like a dream, only the gentlest of pressure and click, latched in. I suppose I'm a bit alarmed that the anti-rattle block achieves the same by transferring the loading to the glass, but then if the pin is held square you don't need to slam the hatch anyway.

I still can't see how you retro-fit the block in place, a bit of judicious prising and easing I presume.

Thanks again for your help. Now I just need to sort out the hinge adjustment so the glass pulls down square onto the bodywork... :w

OK I should have pointed out that the SE6 range will fit SE6,SE6a, SE6b And Middlebridge.,
It will NOT fit SE8.

It will NOT fit SE5, SE5a as they are a smaller bodied car. :|

If anyone's interested, I ordered an anti-rattle block today from QRG. Nigel has the most delightful approach - how much is it? says I, oh, about seven quid, says he, I'll pop it in the post for you tonight !

I have no idea how much he will charge me - VAT, postage? who knows? Hope it's not too much as he has my card details! Anyway, if anyone else wants one it seems he has them in stock at the moment.

You're not the only one. My anti-rattle block arrived in the post today: £12 in all  £7 for the block, £3 P&P, and £2 VAT. And a small packet of Haribo 'Tiny Mix' - not quite sure what they're for, to calm me down while I try to figure out how to get the block located, perhaps? Or possibly to sweeten the bill

Out of curiosity I called Graham Walkers... £2.13 for the part, "a couple of quid" P&P, and then add VAT - so £4.13+20% = £5.17 tops, and they have over 300 (I think I heard him say 385) in stock.

I'm all for supporting the club suppliers, but I certainly won't make that mistake again.

Chris I have 4 complete screens in stock.
And Two SS frames.

The best looking of the lot will probably need the lip seal replacing and the others range from goosed to loose.

I do keep the inner glass to frame extrusion too, got miles of that stuff from when I was trying to make a living fixing Scims.

I can`t guarantee the heaters work on any them.

I realise you just wanted a plug and play unit, but I just don`t have one so if your still interested I can forward pics for you.

The block just slides into place by gently pulling pin away from the glass on the SS frames, but they are more flexible than the Chromed brass frames, so maybe the block is/was only intended for the later flimsier frame ??.
It certainly was not listed for SE5 and they all had the chrome on brass frames.

Mark
