I tended to find to get first when the oil was cold, I had to select 2nd, then back to first and I think that had the wrong oil.

The type 9 does change with oil type - I think I have Comma SX 75W90 GL4 in the sprint car but you will find lots of opinions including ATF. The other problem is the saddle clamp wearing or breaking up (the plastic clip at the bottom of the stick) and/or wear on the metal parts at the bottom of the stick and the corresponding slide inside the extension housing (which usually make reverse difficult - or conversely, too easy to select instead of first!)

I suppose stiff shifting or difficulty engaging correct gears can be caused by many things. I can only relate my own experience.
