Standard 2.9 oil filter fits!

Post by simmit » Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:13 pm

Received information suggested the standard Scorpio 2.9 oil filter is too long to fit in the MB's. However, I find for MB50 it does fit (easily) so perhaps not all MB's are to same build. Anyway, for those who are able to use the standard size filter the MANN ref is W916/1. Thought you might like to know.

It won't fit in my car - the chassis gets in the way.

Strange, is it not! I can only think there must have been changes to chassis/ bodywork over time.

And at 95mm that's longer than the MANN W 961/1 which is 91mm. It gets better.

Having fitted an engine oil cooler to the GTC Bill Sims had to find a replacement oil filter as the standard one would no longer fit. His research came up with one from the Cosworth which is Motorcraft EFL 298 these are only 70mm deep.
That is what I now use.

You are correct, 95mm it is. Where I got 91mm from heaven only knows.

Strange, is it not! I can only think there must have been changes to chassis/ bodywork over time.
MB14 and 46 were both on Mann 916/1 but the clearance between the end of the filter and the bodyshell was tight on 14. I replaced it at the recent service with a 914/2 and saw a marginal improvement in oil pressure.

Just checking out the filter situation, from Mann's own web site it seems the 914/2 is specified for the RHD engine, and the 916/1 for the LHD. Presumably this recognises the different clearances at the side of the respective engines. Otherwise these two filters are presumed to have the same performance.

For the record, Peter, you may want to update your list of alternatives, inasfar as Unipart and Motocraft now seem to be little more than brand names applied to all manner of 'lifestyle' items, and I wonder about the wisdom of suggesting them as acceptable quality items for the MB... Although widely listed on eBay, the country of origin suggests to me a non-zero risk of counterfeiting. I cannot find any Ford website offering Motorcraft parts, and the Unipart site lists over 1000 options for the Scorpio oil filter... obviously their search engine is flaky in the extreme, but seeing oil filters masquerading along with beach umbrellas and picnic crockery does not instil me with confidence

I have a box full of Mann filters so it will be a while before I need more. As to the alternatives I just searched for them on Google and that's what came up.
