Clutch is slipping. Can it be replaced in-situ or is it engine out job?

OK its out but what a struggle!
Had to remove both chassis cross members (one under gearbox mounting t'other under clutch/ bell housing) and of the 8 bolts 5 were so hard in they actually sheared off! Now have to drill them out and tap new threads.
Anyway, next question. From which Ford vehicle and year must I source replacement clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing? There are plenty of Motorcraft numbers on the removed pressure plate and driven plate (though nothing on the release bearing) but none of them seem to register with my internet search. For the 2.9efi engine there seems no end of different part numbers for Granada/ Scorpio/ Sierra so I'm mightily confused.

If you have the original engine then its likely to be Granada - the engine in my car was originally Granada but a Scorpio engine was fitted at 200,000 miles - I don't know what the difference is between the two - mine is a auto as well.

Like you, I think it likely Middlebridge originals were Granada (MK3?) but even if that's so it doesn't help because I find several variants with different clutch part numbers.

My XR4x4 2.9i, my manual OD 5a and later the same 2.9 fitted with a 2.8 flywheel, bellhousing and type 9 gbox in my 5a all used the heavier duty clutch stamped “low lift”.

I always got them from Precision Clutch.

The reg of that XR4x4 was F800 PPE of that helps internet searching.

Have you tried asking Pete H by email? He has had a clutch done and might be able to give details on parts used?

As efi_sprintgte notes, just to add to the confusion some Middlebridge parts could be Sierra 2.9i.

2.9efi clutch change

I now find 'Burton' do a generic clutch kit for all 2.9 engines. Burton generally know what they are about so I suppose it will do proper job. Unfortunately it's make is described as 'Burton' so don't know actually who the maker is and would prefer to buy recognised maker product.

For those who may be interested:-
The guy overhauling my gearbox (and putting in 'longer' 1st gear) reckons unlikely to get joy from Ford parts Dept's as most probably our clutch parts are no longer stocked and therefore not in their computer data base. He recommends Valeo clutch kits and suggests their kit No 801666. His second choice kit would be LUK make but NOT their reconditioned units.
