North Coast 500, (NC500)

Post by Jockyo » Sat Jun 25, 2016 7:06 pm

Although I live in Inverness, its easy to forget the amazing roads and scenery within a very short distance from the doorstep.
A group of us met up early one morning in June at the North side of the Kessock Bridge and took two and a half days to do the route.
On reflection 3 nights would be a better pace.

In the convoy, older cars were x2 Porsche 944, Mk1 Escort, DMC Delorean, My Scimitar SE6B. Modern cars were a Subaru, Jag and a BMW 4X4 thing.
Had superb weather all the way round and on night 1 stopped in Lochinver staying in the Culag Hotel, (Good food and the staff were brilliant), night 2 stopped off at Royal Dornoch where we sampled some excellent whisky at the Dornoch Castle Hotel. Day 3 we had a tour of the Glenmorangie distillery before heading south.

One of our fleet had bought small radios, a hoot listening in to those who had no idea how to use single track passing places, Help! Apart from that good fun to have
On route met MG Owners, Ferrari, Mclaren, Lambo's Morgans, etc and loads of bikers.
Only difficulty was meeting the camper-vans on some of the roads, they struggled on the single track roads.
For those requiring Super Unleaded there are stations at Ullapool, (Lochbroom Filling Station) Thurso, (Bridgend filling station) & Tall Pines Station on the A9 outside Dornoch, as you can see we went the clockwise route.

Places we visited worth a look in addition to John O Groats
Corrieshalloch Gorge - A832 & A835 Junction 12 miles south of Ullapool
Ardvreck Castle - The noisiest thing was a waterfall off in the distance
Cocoa Mountain and Smoo Cave at Durness
Whaligoe steps, below Wick
There are of course many more to see, but thought I would highlight these

So for those of you thinking about it I have attached a few photos to wet your appetite. Well I hope I have, last time I tried it didn't work.
If you get some good weather its a trip youll remember all your life

I've got a link to the North Coast 500 as a favourite, one day I'll do it.

Anybody up for an RSSOC group trip?

Did it a number of years ago before the NC500 promotion and would happily do it again. :)

Drove part of this route - including the Applecross pass- in a GTC (ROX 690Y) with my father in glorious Spring sunshine in the late 90s. Great photos - thanks for posting. Need to do it again!

I only ride 'em - I dunno what makes them work

Those hairpin bends on the Bealach are very tricky on a dark misty night, many years ago I had to do them three point turn style in an old Bedford TK as I couldn't see a darn thing in front of me because of the mist.

Lucky enough to have done the NC500 for a second time. Over 3 days again, (will never learn, it’s not enough. 5 days would be better.) here are some more photos.
