A significant part of my growing up. I still have my Blue Peter Badge somewhere.

Interesting to read the obits and the suggestion that his jack-the-lad on-screen persona was just that, and that he was a private and shy bloke off screen. And that he couldn't stand Biddy Baxter...

And he didn't like the Bolshevik Broadcasting Company either, much like Brian Mathews who's death they announced 4 days before he died!

I still regret I didn't get my way calling our Collie cross 'Shep' - 'Get down Timmy' doesn't have the same ring to it.

Our collie was called timmy when we got him from dogs trust, we changed it to Scimi fits him well.

We used to love watching his exploits on Blue Peter and Go With Noakes. A brilliant and natural kids TV presenter from the days before health and safety

I watched the "cleaning of Nelson's Column" on the BBC News website yesterday and my heart was in my mouth. Over 150ft up wooden ladders that had been lashed together with rope, with no fall arrestor other than a length of rope around his waist when he got to the top. PPE was a pair of slip-ons, flared trousers, a shirt and a blue peter badge. The "I'm a celebrity" contestants have nothing on this fella. His Crest Run and sky diving exploits were legendary.

RIP John.

as with "get down shep" i also remember "and this we prepared earlier" you never truly got to see them make much from start to finish, but that was blue peter.
RIP.

All these exploits as you've all mentioned, it was a mans world in those days different times . shame his contributions to children's TV were not more recognised after blue peter. Great guy. Rip john

John Noakes, IMHO, was the best presenter on telly. Anywhere, any time.
Yes Im the right age to have seen a bit of him on BlueP. He did everything, positive and friendly, like a great ideal-dad. What a man !
The one that sticks in my mind is dropping his strides to show the bruises he got after falling off bobsleigh on Cresta Run. How many telly-types would dare to do that ! None today. Lucky not to have been much worse.
RIP.
