New car headlamps upgrade

Post by Coupe Racing » Mon Nov 07, 2016 11:04 pm

Just taken delivery of a new modern

Nissan Qashqai , and the headlights are terrible.
Its not just me - various forums echo my thoughts.

OEM is LED day time lights , and Halogen dip and main beam.

What are the upgrade options ?

After market bulbs like the Philips RacingVision http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessorie ... group-test

Or LED replacement bulbs ?

I wont go HID and could not afford the Xenon option

Can I go LED replacement bulbs ?

Cheers

Those Phillips upgrade bulbs will be a worthwhile improvement.
The other thing to look at is the adjustment. You can find that even with the dash adjuster on its highest setting the range is inadequate but there will be under bonnet adjusting screws that you can tweek to get a better range on the beam...not so much so as to dazzle other drivers of course.
HID/Xenon....are they not the same thing?...legality or other wise of conversions, need for washers etc. Been done to death on forums, personally I wouldn't go there.
Led bulbs as a conversion are interesting but I have no knowledge...but apparently with led headlights washers are NOT a requirement,so worth investigating.

Washers etc are not required for HID. The rules say IF FITTED they must work, not that they have to be fitted.

"done to death" because VOSA issued an MOT special notice regarding washers and self-levelling for HiD lamps - but when the manual was eventually re-issued they'd changed "must have" to "may have" and "where fitted, must work".

Long (and mainly positive) thread on LED replacement bulbs here, in a TVR : http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1455474

I'm thinking about it - I have halogen conversion on my SE5 and it's good on main beam but fairly rubbish on dipped. In general, I don't plan to drive it much in dark or miserable conditions though.

That's an interesting thread. Took a while to skip through the 22 pages...
Providing the heat sinks of H4 LED's will fit under the cowl, would be so much easier than fitting HID to SS1 (the moving pod makes placement of the ballast tricky if wiring not that long).

I've now found that the latest LED bulbs have not only done away with the fan and heat sink , but some also have the ability to adjust the focal point

Seems to be mixed results
The old reflector technology of old cars seems to create beam pattern problems whereas modern lamps are ok

I'm looking at some H11 and they are plug and play and dimensionally identical and cost about the same as decent uprated halogen bulbs
