The guy I got it from says that the diesel pugs his neighbours have run on it and they have said it works out about 67p a litre! However we shall see.

I ran my old transit on veg oil. I came back from Anglesey in the transit on just veg oil a few times and it ran no different. Just was told to change the filters more often but I didn't. And now you have to pay tax on it I don't think it works out much cheaper then normal diesel at the pumps.

I have heard that it would run on just veg oil in summer but needs the diesel to thin it in winter?

I used to run my Hilux Surf on Veg oil and diesel on a ratio of 3-1 and it ran perfectly. I stopped when veg oil started costing more than diesel. However, you need to be aware that it will be very obvious you're using veg oil as you can't help but notice the chip shop smell. The other point is that you should be paying duty on the oil used, failure to do so can result in a substantial fine. Happens more often than you might think. I got pulled over and had my tank dipped by HMRC once when they were checking for unauthorised use of red diesel.
You have been warned.

So if you pay duty on the veg oil in the first place is that ok? I was thinking costco as a supplier as they do big drums.

No, that's duty at normal rate (20% VAT) - if you use more than 2500 litres pa you must pay fuel duty (another 30 odd pence per litre last time I looked)

Edit - a quick google suggests it was 58p in 2013

Exempt Producers and Users
If you produce and/or use less than 2,500 litres per year of biofuel, and expect to continue at or below this rate of production/use, then you are considered to be an exempt producer. In this case you do not have to register with HMRC, nor do you have to pay any duty. You are however legally required to keep records of a) the date of each supply and/or use, and b) the amount of supply of own use. These records must be preserved for six years.

If it's a PD VW engine just check before bunging anything other than proper diesel into it, could be short term gain from what I recall when running a PD Audi A4

By the time you pay the duty it works out no cheaper then normal diesel. I just put normal diesel in now as not worth the hassle.
