Bond Equipe GT4S.

Post by SRF » Fri Feb 06, 2015 11:00 pm

This is the first post on what will be the restoration of a 1968 Bond Equipe. It's not a reliant but they did buy Bond car company. The model I have uses Triumph Herald as a base with a 1300 cc twin carb Spitfire engine. Apart from the doors and the bulkhead which are steel, the body is fibreglass. They are a marmite car, you either like the shape or not. It wasn't my first choice but it was local and had a lot of work done on the chassis, brakes and suspension. There are receipts for over £500 which has been spent on it. The bodywork is good but hasn't been fastened on the chassis. The rest of the car is in a 1000 bits. I will add some photos but photo bucket is turning all uploads red.

These are the photographs from the original advert. The car in the back ground is a Willys Overlander and along side that out of view is a hand built MG V8 special.

Its looking good - I fancied one for a long time - Triumph mechanicals with a GRP body - what better could you do.

I have considered putting a 2l straight six in it like the ones in the Vitesse and GT6, but it is so original it is probably best to leave it as it is. I think it will be plenty fast enough with a 1300cc twin carb lump.

Sid Hurrell tuned the original"works" cars , which remained at 1300cc. They also had Mangoletsi exhaust systems . I don't know exactly what the tuning mods were, but they really used to sing , and turned out about 95bhp at 5,000 rpms. The "Monte" rally car was good for over 100mph, and had electric overdrive available on 2nd,3rd and 4th gears. John Cuff said the overdrive on 2nd gear was brilliant, making it in effect a really good close-ratio box.

I had one of those many years ago. Your bracketed comment is spot on - the steering is direct (less than one turn lock-to-lock) and the car was very quick. A6 Shap Fell heading North 80+mph quick.

Well done Ray.
As you no-doubt have noticed, the chassis is a little more fragile than the Scimmies but it looks like you have that sorted. At least it is not a big issue to get the body off.
It is worth joining the Triumph Sports Six OC. Guy Singleton is the guru for the Bond Equipe range. He sent us an 'alterpart' list which was most helpful. As luck would have it, the club HQ is just down the road from me :) .
Looks like you have the 'special' front seats with it. How about the expensive and sought-after Les Leston steering wheel? Ours was missing but we bought half an Equipe for £50 that still had one. A quick sand down and varnish and it was almost as good as new.
I still have a few odd bits lying around but most stuff is available from Rimmers et al. The bumper strips are impossible to locate. Look after them. I got some new 'finials' but not sure who-if anyone supplies them now.

Keep in touch.

Thanks for that info. This is the steering wheel

The one thing I am going to struggle with is the exhaust system. There isn't any of the original, and I believe a Herald one won't fit.
I have had a look at the Triumph sport 6 site when I had my Vitesse.

Do you still have the Alterpart list, a copy would be very helpful.

2 x documents PMed.
Exhaust can be ordered from TSSC. We made one up from Herald and Spitfire parts (see documents) but it is quite noisy so the proper system might be a better bet if you are starting from scratch.

Just a thought on the exhaust why not price a longlife one? Branches all over the country and good price too! a number of RSSOC members have used them with no issues!
