Here's an update for anyone interested :D I've just about finished fitting out the interior trim, not without some difficult, but hey what's new
In the early Elans, S1 and S2, a rubberised matting was used over the underfelt, it's affectional known as Alligator skin (or Elephant/Frog/ toad skin according to your inclination) not carpet. This can only be obtained from one supplier in America and is very expensive (nearly £1000 inc delivery  ). Luckily mine had already been purchased and came with the boxes of bits. Here's some pics

Quite pleased with how that has all come out in the end.Not without the usual aggrevation :w . Just waiting for the seats to come back from the trimmers. Next I have to re-assemble and fit the doors with the window mechanism and trim. Getting closer to a finish
BTW just had a valuation from Club Lotus for insurance purposes, Shhhh dont tell SWMBO £35k as it is at the mo

Value sounds reasonable. Paul Matty has Elans at over 40K.

Any updates?Have you stayed with Do-Nuts, SE engine?

Geoff

great work as always 8)

just a quick question. Given that the club valuation is £35k, and assuming most cars sell for slightly less than the valuation (lets assume 30k?) are you likely to get back your investment in parts and services (ignoring your time as we all give that up to old cars FOC). When I restored an MGB in 1990ish, it cost me 7.5k-8k to build but was offered 10k for it with a club value higher still, so the resto was 'worth' it at the time. in recent years that's not been the case.

ive oftened wondered if I restored another classic (ignoring my penchant competing in scimitars which isn't likely to change ;-) ) whether id get my money back. If so, I suspect it would have to be another marque other than a scimitar as we all seem to pour mony into scimitars and the market still be low for them

Thanks chaps
Viv, Although I'd love to bring it to LM this year I'm afraid I won't be coming this year :( Matt and I had a joint Christmas present this year, weekend tickets for the Grand Prix at Silverstone 4th to 6th July, which unfortunately clashes. Really will miss your happy grin though
Chris, I don't mind everyone knowing that the car (in bits remember) cost me £14k, but that included a new chassis, mostly new suspension, new dash, engine bottom end and numerous other new bits and pieces including that matting that the PO had collected together to begin the rebuild. So far I reckon it will cost close to another £4-5k including all body prep and paint, which I did myself, new hood, windscreen, fuel tank, rotoflex' etc etc. So, yes for me definitely a good investment (as I justified myself to the Ayatollah at the time  ), but it all depends on what you have to pay for the original car. Even rough "barn finds" are asking silly money. I think I got a bargain in retrospect.
Nick, I've stuck with the doughnuts (Rotoflex) as I prefer them. Head has an SE cam and big valves on the inlet only ( read the thread again   )

Not the Le Mans Classic Geoff (which is next year) - Viv means the milk float race in June :-)

Threatened you with the latest pics so here they are :)
First the doors had to be made up. Handles have been rechromed, door channels re-fabricated in stainless steel and new vinyl. Hardboard is used for the backing panels (can't say Lotus skimped on materials eh? )
First I fitted the sidewindows. These are simple manual lift mechanisms a la London Taxi. No winder or electric windows in the S2

Fittin the back panel was a pain, but nothing that a restorer of GTEs can't cope with

In the last pic you can also see I've fitted the newly refurbed seats. As I've reached the limit of 3 in this post I'll post more pics in a new post. Just sit still a mo and I'll be with you dreckly :)
