Testing ABS sensor Volvo C30

Post by Alan SS1 » Sat Jan 13, 2018 9:59 pm

Sorry to post a non-scim question on here but no joy on the Volvo web-site :-(

over last few weeks been getting a 'clicking' noise same as you'd get when teh traction control kicks in an then power drops (sometimes at one and same time) as last week when set off at a roundabout when the TCS light flickered and car power dropped (same as you'd get on icy / slippy road)

I don't get ANY error codes when check with various OBD2 readers, both the app on the phone and a PC based one. TBH I'm not sure if the app actually does ABS . ..

but the PC one 'claims' to do lots of things.

anyway I found a similar fault/issue on S40/V40 online where the drive shaft securing nut if not fully tight allows the shaft to float 'slightly' so carrying the serrated ring to move from sensor. this brings up spurious errors and doesn't always store the fault code (maybe cos it isn't permanent??)

In this car the bearing has a wee magnetic disc as part of the bearing seal and it uses this to give pulses.

did some digging today and it 'appears' as if a chunk of the magnetic ring , about 5 or 6mm is missing

trying to take a photo is ruddy difficult but see a couple of examples.

any advice is useful,

maybe have to take it to a garage :-(
put it onto the brake rollers to see if we can get the error to appear AND read out/listen where noise comes from?

If you are missing part of the ring, then that will give a plausible (albeit incorrect) signal so I’m not surprised there aren’t any fault codes reporting.

What’s the mark/space ratio and the pulses per rev? Looks like not many compared to modern ABS systems with 20-60 pulses/rev.

Whichever way, you need a new ring.

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.

Phil
Thanks, you've confirmed my suspicions , afraid it's not just a new ring, it is part of the dirt cover on the bearing  I guess that they reckoned more reliable than the old 'toothed' variety.

as for pulses I think the magnetic bits are spaced every 3 -4mm around a 60mm PCD
I think that I was hoping that I didn't need a new bearing at £100 !!! (although when i saw that bit missing it did fill me with dread :-( )
That bearing has only lasted 25k, the first one was a bit 'noisy' (also at 25k) then 'howled' from Kinlochrannoch back to ABZ !!

just changed the other side last month for the spare I'd bought at the same time.

EDIT

just whipped off the sensor plug to that wheel, took it for a quick whirl for half a mile or so ; no problems, no issues, other than a HUGE message saying ABS / Anti skid service required :-)

mind you it was intermittent . . . . . ..

Not long ago done the front wheel bearing on the wife's c70, part was £65 from local motor factor ( c30 & c70 are focus based ) new bearing went in the freezer for a few hours, beat the old bearing out & hub went it the oven for 20 minutes, the too went together with a few taps with big hammer :D

Aye I kent FOCUS based, and yes stick to older cars, trouble is that this Volvo is a Ford in drag

just been away in SWAMBO's 480, (which is an unholy marriage between DAF/Renault/Volvo) BUT much more fun than the C30, and whisper it , nippier than SS1

to change the last bearing I splashed out on a 12T hydraulic press and that moved it 'no sweat', this side should be easier as it was already replaced, (i hope)

went back in with a dash of oil and the TANGYE 15cwt version, more control!

£65 sounds CHEAP, I'll give my local guys a ring in AM, cheapest I'd seen on tinternet was around £100 (ish) but cheaper this time than last, they must be selling more of them . . . . .

Update
Removal of bearing was similar to previous efforts and this time it comes with a snazzy 'dust shield that sits on teh drive shaft and keeps most of the rust/debris etc away from said ABS ring.

I also removed any remains of crusty stuff from around the bearing housing , but forgot to apply healthy helping of grease to try and keep rust at bay for a bit longer. paint might have worked given A time & B air temp > -3C

anyhow see photo of offending object

I'll maybe pull the drive shaft from the other side (ie leave shaft and pull arm away from it) and fit a similar dirt shield to save myself £75 and a whole morning's work

and grief from SWAMBO
