Good news and bad news!
Following Corky's recommendation I now have PowerFlow stainless exhaust boxes fitted, AND this morning it passed the MOT.
However the inspector pointed out that the offside engine mount has allowed the starter & solenoid to rest on the chassis rail, so I need a new one.
I'll call Kevin Dipchan shortly, but if he can't help is there anyone else I should try?
He says he has them in stock, so no problem after all !!

It was years ago, but when I tried out remanufactured S6 engine mounts via Adrian Stapely they weren't good quality - they were very soft and pliable and I didn't trust the weight of the S6 on them especially as they rely on shear strength, not compression. I recall they were sourced from Australia. But Kevin Dipchon at Zodiac Motors is a top guy so if he reckons they are now OK I have no doubt you can trust him.

I converted to Triumph TR6 mounts which are the same design, readily available and cheap and - at the time, in my view - much better quality. The studs more-or-less fit the chassis brackets with minor fettling, but they sit the engine a bit higher (or is it lower? I forget now) so I had to change the engine mount brackets which bolt to the engine block to compensate. I used something like 4mm steel bent and cut to size - very simple.

And Chris, thanks for the suggested alternative. I need to lift the engine a bit to increase the clearance starter/chassis so getting bespoke brackets would be a good approach. I'll post a message when I get the new bits from Kevin.
I now have another issue, I'll post it on the Technical Discussion thread.

Hi Philip

I was interested to hear that you have recently obtained an MoT for your 50+ year old car. Another Sabre Six owner has told us that his MoT garage refused to carry out an MoT on his car. Instead he carried out an equivalent technical inspection and issued a written statement that it met MoT requirement.

I think this MoT situation has still not settled.

I've just checked my notes from the time and in fact the TR6 mounts lower the engine by about 10mm compared with the OEM Zodiac ones, hence the need for some new engine mount brackets to compensate. If you compare TR6 mounts with originals it's obvious why. At the time quality replacement Zodiac mounts weren't that easy to get hold of and I quite liked the fact that the TR6 ones would always be available, cheap and off the shelf if I needed them.

I can't believe the MOT tester thought he didn't need to do what the customer asked for!
AFAIK a Technical Inspection Report won't be logged on the DVLA website.
I can recommend the one I use, based in Wraysbury, M3/M25 junction (although that's probably not a very good recommendation, I get there via the Windsor Great Park, a pleasant drive)

What is the difference in height? The studs on the TR mount look long enough to add 1/2” plate under?

The mounts sit vertically i.e. in the attitude shown in the photo so it's the vertical offset between the studs and the holes which is important.

Well, the new Zodiac mounts turned up yesterday, and it seems I might have had TR6 mounts fitted too.
The biggest problem is the studs on the Ford parts are 3/8 UNC whereas the existing mounts are 3/8 UNF, so I'm waiting for new nuts, even as we speak! :(

Your old mount is on the right? Looks definitely TR6, which explains why your engine sits 1/2" lower than it should if the brackets haven't been fettled.

The UNC nuts turned up whilst we were away in France for a few days, so I'll get the Ford mounts fitted tomorrow afternoon, fingers crossed everything goes back easily.
