Sabre/Sabra Weekend August 2018

Post by chrisgallacher » Thu Aug 30, 2018 3:36 pm

No-one else has started a thread, so here goes :)

Car all prepped and serviced, likewise driver. Ready for an early start tomorrow morning for the short hop to Newhaven and the crossing to Dieppe, followed by a pleasant four-hour, rural, B-road drive through NE France and the WWI battlefields to near Mons in Belgium. Looking forward to it!

Tyres-Pneus-Online still haven't delivered the four new tyres for the alloys (but I do believe the missing ones are on their way now), so it's on again with the boring rally TR6 steels.

Tried to persuade Caroline to come with me, but she appears to be under the impression that Sabres are cramped, noisy, stuffy, smelly, full of vibration, there's nowhere for a decent bag and that if she got in she'd never get out again. Especially after 4 hours. Hmmm, perceptive... :)

Hi Chris Still prepping 42 ENX, going the euro tunnel route, yours sounds much nicer, should have put a bit more thought into it  Got to load the luggage all has to be in smallish soft bags so it can be squeezed in, it also act as sound deadening! See you tomorrow evening at the hotel with the others. John

I hope everyone has a good time, pass on my good wishes. :)
Perhaps after I've rewired the dash I'll start making longer trips! (Only one fuse for everything and no relays! )
Cheers,
Philip

Sabre/Sabra Weekend August 2018

Post by Sabreite » Tue Sep 04, 2018 6:51 pm

Just an update from the Sabra Sabre meet. We all had a very enjoyable weekend good company good food good weather and interesting excursions. Thanks to Jacques and Magda for organizing everything. See photo of some of the cars, there were others that joined us who did not stay at the hotel, so a great turnout of cars. I expect others will add some of their photos as well.

I'll echo John's comments - it was a great weekend, so thank you Jacques and Magda for pulling everything together!

Mandatory line-up of cars outside the hotel on the Sat morning:

On the Sunday morning at the Mons breakfast meeting we were joined by (I think - I lost count!) four more Sabras. This lovely Sabra GT, restored by Jacques:

Stop-off near Albert on the run back to Dieppe:

Whilst I was at in the queue at Dieppe waiting for the boat to start loading a friendly chap in his mid-30s wandered over and said "Nice car! What is it, a Triumph GT6-based special?" Not a bad guess, so we had a chat like you do about the car and he said "My Dad's always been interested in cars and knows them pretty well..." I was trying to sound interested when he went on to say "... and he used to present Top Gear  ". Well that certainly got my attention, and as an opening gambit in the classic car conversation stakes I thought that was a winner! Anyway I mentally ruled out Clarkson, Hammond or May and was about to plump for William Woollard from the old Top Gear when he said that his Dad is Chris Goffey (he of the beard and woolly jumpers), now retired but still active in the car world generally. Small world. I don't know if Chris Goffey knows Sabres, but I do seem to recall a review he did of the SS1 on Top Gear (the old Top Gear, for our younger readers :) )

Chris, you might be interested in this picture from the first Sabra Sabre meeting in 2000 when you were a boy! All cars and drivers present this year. You'll recognise the car I'm leaning on.

When I were a lad - I wish..! I'm pretty sure I have a print of that picture in the history file of the car here at home. Thanks for posting, Tony!

I have to say that given that was almost 20 years ago the three youngsters in the photo haven't aged that badly :)

I think I remember Jacques or Jeff commenting that you could see at a glance - given their positioning - who were drivers from the continent, and who from the UK.

Hallo Chris, Tony,
Thanks for the nice pictures and comments. On Sunday morning there were 14 Sabra/es, very nice; the two Scimitars were welcome too of course.
I am already looking forward to next year's jubileum meeting, the 20th one. Your pictures are a wake up call for all Sabra Sabre owners to participate to the next meeting in the UK.
PS the owners aged not too bad , but the cars are looking better each year. How do they do this? Though little things those Sabra/es.
Jacques
