door handle retainers

Post by jvasabra » Tue Jul 31, 2018 11:43 am

Hello,
Problem with the door handles retainers on Sabra GT 4808 . Door handles come off , and out of the retainers, I think because of the car expanding (!!) in this Summer's heat and doors squeesing.
Anyone has two retainers for sale, on 4808 the "zamac" metal broke.
I think of reinforcing the handle's fixing at the retainers side , by drilling a hole + screw in a stud in the handle, then take it through the hole in the retainer and put a washer +nut inside the doro. Then it would be as it is was one part, everything bolted together.
Anyone done this ?

You can send me PM with the price +postage To Belgium or just put your info on the forum if this is allowed.

Thanks. Jacques Vandevelde

Hi Jacques,
I'm not sure, from your description, what is broken (my Sabre Six is bound to be a different arrangement).
In my opinion I don't think you will get sufficient strength if you are proposing screwing a stud into the zamac as it is soft metal (I used to mould it as an apprentice - we called it Mazak) and will probably strip the thread when you pull on the handle to close the door.
Perhaps posting a photo would help stimulate helpful suggestions from others on the Forum?

Thank you for the suggestion.
It is about the outside door handles. There are probably the same on all sabre's and sabra's. Only fixed with 1 bolt in te door and slid into a small triangular retainer on the other side.
When door is resistant the handle comes out of the retainer quite easily.

door handle retainers

Here's a picture of my drivers door handle - the passenger side is the same but without the keyhole.
It looks like it is made to appear as if it had the same fitting as yours, but it is one piece. I haven't taken the door card off but I think it has a small bolt that screws in. Perhaps the extra bit of metal gives extra strength?
I assume the door skin on yours is flexible and allows the handle to pull out of the mount. Perhaps a metal strip fastened by the handle and the mount inside the door would provide enough stiffness?

door handle retainers

I always thought the original handles are 2 part, as fitted to Standard 8 and 10 cars , then fitted to Bristols and early TVR and even Rochdale Olympic,s as well as others . They are being reproduced in decent metal nowadays . I don’t think the one piece handles are original fitment but have been fitted by a later owner as a workaround fix.

Hello,
Yes, as Roymck says they are in two parts ; it is the small part I cal the retainer and the rims are so small ( and damaged now) that the handle comes out of it.
I knew the website you mention. I have asked them if they sell those retainers a part from the complete set. No answer yet, but when I get an answer I will keep you informed.

André replaced his door handles with new ones. Perhaps he still has his old "retainers"?

Your door handles are from a Standard 8/10. The photo posted by Old and Slow is of a Rover P4 door handle. Reliant/ Autocars obviously used both types. Both types can be obtained new.
