Wire Wheels ??

Post by gtcse8 » Wed Apr 08, 2020 9:03 am

Probably been asked before, but I can`t find a conclusive answer.

Is there a "Special" wire wheel that was Reliant specific?.

Or did they just use a standard 15" wheel.

I know there are Four options for TR6, and Two for TR5.
Then there are the 15" frm MGB/C

I have a few in Chrome and a Set of Four painted.

Cheers Mark

Mark, exercising the grey matter, I seem to recall being told that the Coupe had 72 spoke wire wheels, and that the Sabre had fewer. Can't remember who told me, but might have been Chris Lloyd.

And no, I've not counted them recently

According to Dave Poole’s site, the Sabres had 4.5J rims, and the Coupes 5J?

Thanks Gavin, you saved me the job
I have emailed Mr & Mrs Heath to see if they have any info I can use.

I suspect as a rally car, yours would have had the strongest ones available, Philip. I think I recall broken spokes being an issue on the initial rally outings on the Sabre 4’s?

Cheers Phil

The blue ones look remarkably like my set of Four complete with tyres that I was going to fit to the Blue GTC, but I sold that coloured one, still got a Trafalgar Blue one though.

There was a picture somewhere of a collapsed wire wheel on a rally (it is in "Reliant Sports Cars", p 50) but the incident involved hitting some tree trunks rather than failure under load. I imagine they aren't heavy duty but others might know better.
I've never fitted them - not sure I like the blue.
Good luck in moving them on.
Philip
