I've updated the third post to show "definite/interested". Thanks to those replying so far - anyone else?

I'll try and ensure that there's not a long delay on this project as I know how frustrating it can be when they drag on and on!

Coupe headlamp covers

Maybe they could be fixed to the headlamp surround covers ( at the rear of the cover ) and the place the combined assembly into the aperture then secure the combination via wingnuts as currently ?

Would make removal easier

Coupe headlamp covers

Post by BigBobPilot » Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:03 pm

Hello David,

funnily enough, the covers on my car are a bit degraded, I was going to re-make them in Lexan, but this would save some of the effort, so put me down for some. I won't need the mounting brackets though.

Hopefully not too many peoploe will fit them, so it stays a little bit unique!

I agree ..... yet here I am highlighting a prospective source! :hand:
Still, it will be a very time-limited offer.

I think they look good, a couple of comments:

As Ben will have noticed I added a third bracket as they tended to move a bit with 2.

They can mist up a bit.

I have a set of the originals that I bought from Richard Sherwin after he sold his red rally car JET 513F (just sold again recently). They were cut to fit that car, so whilst the o/s fits the apertures on most SE4s the n/s doesn't. Perhaps as a result of a previous repair to JET and the covers being made afterwards? Making new ones oversize seems sensible as long as they can be easily trimmed to match the aperture of each car.

I've not used the originals but had some copies made to fit OPY 170G. The fixing with the right angle bent brackets is fiddly and noticeable if you don't paint them to match the body colour. It's not always easy to get the cover to sit and stay square unless you use a transparent non-silicone sealant or clear double sided tape to keep them in place. If you don't seal them the dirt can gather quickly and it's a pain taking them off frequently to clean and then replace them. In the end I was getting condensation inside so I removed them before I did any paint damage. I was using the car right through the Winter, so might not be a problem for Summer use.

I think the opportunity is there for someone to come up with a means to either make them easily detachable (not so much that they fall off.....) maybe with small magnets or countersunk stainless screws or perhaps even a secreted top/bottom hinge and catch? They do add something to the look of the car but making them removable whilst not letting the fixings spoil the lines, needs someone with more time and a flair for design that I don't have.

Coupe headlamp covers - LAST CHANCE

Post by David Tew » Thu Dec 20, 2018 9:00 am

I shall be closing this tomorrow morning (21st) so if anyone else has an interest in the headlamp covers now's the time to say so.

(Only serious expressions of interest, please. No firm commitment, of course).

A quick update on the covers.

I've spoken to the guy who was getting them made and he tells me that the first sample wasn't a particularly good fit but he's willing to try again. To help with this I have let him borrow the covers I have (made by Les Trafford) as a pattern as these are a perfect fit.

Hopefully I'll have a further update soon.
:)
