Fitting wire wheels on a SE4a Coupe

Post by trevor » Mon Oct 22, 2018 8:42 pm

My Coupe SE4a has wire wheels from the earlier Coupe. They have 5 J wide rims. I intend to fit wires with 5.1/2 J rims as on the original steel wheels.
I need to know the offset required to clear brakes and suspension etc. Problem is I don't have an original steel wheel to measure.
Could any kind person with a Coupe on steel wheels measure the distance from the face that sits on the brake drum to the inside rim.
Rest a ruler across the rim and tape meaure down to bolt holes. Easy if you meaure the spare wheel - simples!
Once I know the distance I can then order my new wheels to complete the full restoration of my 1968 Coupe, saved from the Fire Brigade who wanted it for "practice!.

Fitting wire wheels on a SE4a Coupe

Hi Roy,
Yes, thats the look. Are your wheels 5J as on the SE4 or 5.1/2J like on the MGC. If so could you measure the dimension from
back of hub to the rim?
My car only had 4 steel wheels and in a bad state. The previous owner had spent time and money on the car before leaving it in a field
so all was undone. When I first got it going it had no self centring - roundabouts hands off!

I think they are MGC wheels 72 spoke . Give me a day or so and I will measure them up for you.

Is this what you're after Trevor?

Original Coupe steel wheel... 104mm inner rim to bolt hole face, as shown:

Fitting wire wheels on a SE4a Coupe

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the measurement. I will now be able to identify the correct size wheels for the SE4a.
Not sure if I shall go for chrome or painted. Depends on how much cash is left after total restoration.
Overhauling everything on an old dog, including a paint off respray there is a limit you need spend
before you end up with a really nice usable classic.
Cheers

Photo of my wheels as promised . Pretty sure they are MGC wheels as the Alloy knock on MGC wheels on my MGB fitted a treat on the Coupe . They are 72 Spoke 5 1/2 inch X 15 .

Don’t forget total inset / offset my vary depending on the wire wheel adaptors used , not all may be the same . Also I have spacers on the front of mine about 10mm between hub and adaptor .
