Alternative Coupé register ;-)

Post by DARK STAR » Thu Sep 13, 2018 10:04 pm

Not wanting to step on Matt's toes I have been indexing all my Coupé photos by registration number.
I'll add the chassis numbers from Matt's site when I get round to it 8)
So if you have any enquiries about a particular Coupé I will at least know if I have a pic of it.

The first few cars are well-known, AUE 38B which of course was an Ogle not a Reliant, BUE 441B and 442B.
These were chassis 0002, 0003, 0004 respectively (0001 was scrapped, no photo found).
Less well-known was BUE 443B (chassis 0005), here is a photo of it at Scarborough Hill Climb in 1969.
Matt thinks chassis 0006 was BUE 444B but was scrapped, no photo exists
From early days Reliant tried variations on a theme with the blue IRS car DBF 853C, chassis 0007
and the very Ogle-style nose of 'development car' HOO 465B, chassis 0008.

There are pics of about 400 different cars so yours is probably among them ...

I went to look at a coupe for sale in the early '80s that had an extended nose, a bit like a Plymouth Roadrunner does, that looked very much like that. The seller said it was a factory prototype but the work looked very amateurish (didn't mean it wasn't done by Reliant...) so I didn't buy it.

The funny nose car was quite an early one, chassis 0067, no-one really seems to know anything about it.
It appeared in a magazine article which I have on file but not indexed 8) so you'd have search the page on my site http://www.scimitarfrance.net/scimitarf ... resse.html

HDB I have but not 567
GJA 567D (seems to be the day of the 67) no old pics, I expect you have these from 2013 approx.

Thanks for the enquiries, this is fun :D

Lovely, cheers. I'm not too surprised about HDB, it was last on the road in 1980

If you're really rather keen, you could always approach Matt and see how dearly he wants to hold onto the position.

I was short of volunteers when I wanted to step away from SS1 registrar.

You don't ask, you don't get!

Funnily enough Thomas Touw posted a pic of the sharknose on Facebook this week asking for info - apparently a friend of his owned it in Holland in the 80s

Phil, thanks but I already have too much work with Scimitar France
I've been working on my Coupé index on and off (mostly off) for five years already ...

Jim, that is certainly a coincidence - and that is a much better photo than the one I have so thanks !

Ok so I had to search my press files and found two references.
The car was for sale in 1980, and in 1982 belonged to Clive and Ruth de Carle ...

That's the one I looked at. It must have been '82 or '83 and it was in Chiswick.

FYM 306C was perfectly normal, one reg number before but two chassis numbers after ...

Here is a puzzle I discovered while searching FYM.
This gold car was obviously a factory demonstrator / press car but its registration number which I decipher as BRE 296D is unknown to me and apparently to Matt.
It is supposed to be a 2,5 but I searched the 3 litres as well ;-)
The car in the article doesn't look like the same registration as on the cover but the scan is not good enough to say for sure.
Anyone know anything about it?

Accepting the slightly odd grille treatment of course :)
Although that's probably an owner modification.

Have you anything on HEG 387D, pre 1988 (which is when I acquired it)

Bumper doesn’t look right either?

I had some correspondence with Dave Poole some time ago regarding the gold car - I think he may have some more photos of it?

Only one pic of HEG 387D, without date but almost certainly after 1988.
Have you one of it finished 8) ?

I'll have a look at Dave's site thanks Jim.

Thanks Chris. That's one of my pics, circa 2010-11, before I set about paint stripping. Not finished yet
