Just bought a coupe ..

Post by dand » Mon Sep 03, 2018 3:21 pm

Hi all,

Having owned a coupe for many years ago back in the '80s I've just gone halves on one with a mate and picked it up on Friday. Collected it from Chester (ish) then had to battle around Birmingham on the way home. Of course it got hot and when hot the coil gives up so it broke down 3 times on the M42!

But made it home and it gave us a great day out on Sunday at the Shere Hill Climb.

Not sure exactly what we're going to do with it - probably some classic road rallies, sprints etc.

Welcome to the forum, it's interesting to hear about the car. It certainly sounds as though you've thrown yoursef in at the deep end! Whatever you choose to do, good luck! :D

A friend of mine, Robert Clayson, was official photographer for the Shere Hill Climb, so no doubt some excellent photos will be appearing on his Shere Hillclimb Page in due course :)

This has quite an interesting history. It was originally a Reliant press car that was given to Edward Eves of Autocar to run. He used it for a while but it was badly damaged on a pile up on the M1 in 1968.

It was then repaired by Cope's and Reliant. At some point the registration was changed to UUY 948F but the guy we bought it from did some digging into it's history and had it returned to it's original plate.

It needs a few trivial things sorted like new hoses, ignition, fuelling but nothing that a couple of weekends fettling won't sort out.

Very nice!
It might be a good idea to keep a spare coil handy ...

That is interesting! Edward Eves' replacement car, ORE259F, is still around and owned by Peter Freeman, who is on this forum. :D It's nice that it's now back on it's original reg.

Do you know it's original colour? It's going to need some paint at some point although a full respray isn't on the to do list for a while.

No, it was white in 1972 but visibly darker before that in the monochrome photos.
The other car in the accident photo is darker so probably red, HRF perhaps gold ?

Chris, I think you've mixed-up you're photos - that's another post-accident photo of HRF (note that it's got no windscreen, and a bent steering wheel)
See Dave Poole's Sporting Reliants :)

Yep, think you're right.
But I can't find another pic which the caption could refer to
I'll keep looking.
